LAS VEGAS (AP) — The U.S. government now wants a former FBI informant who fabricated a story about former President Joe Biden and his son Hunter accepting bribes to be released from prison while he appeals his conviction, it was revealed Thursday in court records.

Alexander Smirnov, 44, was sentenced to six years in prison in early January after pleading guilty in Los Angeles federal court to tax evasion and lying to the FBI about the phony bribery scheme, which was described by prosecutors at the time as an effort to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Smirnov had been prosecuted by former Justice Department special counsel David Weiss, who resigned in January just days before President Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second term. Smirnov’s case was reassigned Thursday to a new federal prosecutor, court records show, who jointly filed a motion the same day with Smirnov’s attorneys seeking his release.

There are but they don’t have power AOC and The Bernie (independent but votes with the Democrats) but the hard cold reality is the leadership are the same as Australian Liberals with some power brokers hard right.all believe in neoliberalism same as Australian Labor. The RNJ need someone to hate so you get confected culture wars so conservatives can stay in the game the sheep love it hence the hate generated being so successful for Trump. Us not that long ago moved the basic hourly rate from $7 like I said there are no left wing in power in the US.

Bernie Sanders, advocates pretty much what exists in Australia, the truth is money runs the US regardless who is in power its certainly more visible with Trump but not a lot of difference with the Democrats.

If their was a so called left wing in the US with power they would fix the below.

Clinton and Obama both had two terms (Democrats) Obama had a go at health care, cost the Democrats the midterm elections but anyone who does any sort of policy for the less off get called Communists, Marxist etc similar stupidity as you see on the forum.

Republicans tend to run the show and since the Tea Party just attempt to block every thing regardless of its value to the US population its what Abbott copied here just say no terrible politics.

That depends on what one associates the Left with, what one expects a Left political party to actually do.

I don't think I'd be the only one who at this point associates Left politics primarily with (in random order) indigenous people, LGBTQIA activism, opposed to heavy industry and manufacturing, disliking cars and urban sprawl, disliking traditional families, advocating employment in low value occupations most notably tourism and services, etc.

That Left politics is perceived to have abandoned the working class is the actual reason Trump is US president. Right or wrong, a great many do feel they've been abandoned and the Left needs to accept responsibility for that situation having arisen.
 
Well I kind of wonder, how we pay for Healthcare, NDIS, Centre Link, Pensions,Child care, Green subsidies, Fuel Subsidies, Electricity subsidies etc, if iron ore gets trashed as nickel and lithium has been.
Especially when we have a trillion dollars of debt and you think about how much money is being thrown around in election promises, meanwhile we have no plans to grow the countries income.

Interesting times.
 
Expanding on the previous post a bit, about a decade ago an incident occurred in Australia, that I personally witnessed, which involved a relatively young person (early 20's) making a statement that "the unions should form their own political party".

Stunned silence from everyone else in the room until someone pointed out about the ALP.

His response "but they don't represent workers" or words to that effect.

And that's exactly how many are seeing it. They might represent them in theory, they might even do it in practice, but the perception is very different. This being something that affects the US, Australia and various others.
 
Yes so many can see the problem, yet so few of those who supposedly represent them, seem to do much to actually change the issues and it doesn't seem to matter who gets voted in.

Hopefully the current chaos, can dislodge the ingrained incompetence and obvious self interest in parliament.

One can only hope.
