Rugby League

Good morning
Sad news for Queenslanders and Rugby League lovers alike.
Vale John McDonald.

Toowoomba-based McDonald, 79, died late yesterday (13/09/23) afternoon. He was a former outstanding centre who played 13 Tests for Australia before coaching Queensland in the iconic first State of Origin match at Suncorp Stadium when the Maroons beat NSW 20-10.

He then spent 20 years as chairman of the QRL where his alliance with his former Toowoomba Grammar School classmate Ross Livermore was one of the most effective administrative partnerships the Queensland game has seen.

Also the first Queenslander to become chairman of the ARL, McDonald made arguably a greater contribution to the game’s administration than any other former player.

McDonald was also a professional runner who came close to claiming the world professional record for 440 yards, winning the Gilgandra Gift and the 880 yards at the Bendigo Gift in 1966.

Lured to Manly in 1969, McDonald played 62 games for the Sea Eagles, scoring 30 tries and captaining the club in their 23-12 loss to South Sydney in the grand final in which John Sattler famously played with a broken jaw.

McDonald’s talent shone early and he played as a 19-year-old in the prestigious Bulimba Cup intercity competition for Toowoomba in 1964.

Though his Toowoomba club Valleys were disappointed to lose him to Manly the $14,000 transfer fee they received for his services enabled them to buy land for their ground which was ultimately named after him!!!

McDonald played 10 games for Queensland from 1965-68 and four for NSW from 1969-70.

RIP Legend.

Good morning,

Willy Mason and Tyson Gambles banter as reported.
Funnieeeeee

Mason started the exchange when he said on his podcast two weeks ago the Knights had “worst f---ing spine in the league” without Kalyn Ponga.

Gamble then responded.
“Me, Jacko (Hastings) and Phoenix (Crossland) all saw it,” Gamble said.
“Everybody’s got an opinion. It’s all right, he should probably worry about his own backyard (at Bulldogs) before he starts worrying about other people.
“He was a middle, not a half, so tell him to get f---ed.

There could not be a bigger hole that Tyson gamble wants to crawl into right now.
Pick ya battles boy. You are below average. @levelsnetwork

Don't think this one will end soon, even though the Knights season is over.

Panthers certainly got the better of Storm in the 1st half leading 18 to 4 going to the sheds. Storm will need to step up some more if they are to be any chance. Munster needs to get his finger out and do something not withstanding Penriths ability to shut him down... Hmmm second half should be intense...

So, Brandy pulls out of SoO 2024, with assistant coaches Paul McGregor, Danny Buderus and Andrew Johns also given the arse, and the Blues wanna bring back big Phil Gould ... to work with and mentor Fittler ... ha ha ha ha ha ha oh the blues ...

Panthers just scored 24 - 4

EDIT: Penrith scores again... all over red rover

Go Panthers, the only NSW team left.

Be a traditional clash for the GF, Broncos V Panthers or NSW V QLD

should be a great GF

Broncos gotta beat the Warriors yet, at home... reckon a few kiwis will be at Suncorp too, they just luv Australia ha ha ha ha

Anyways, NZ will take it to Brisbane not sure they can for 80 minutes though ... Bookies got Brisvagus short priced favourite head-to-head at $1.26. Warriors be a good bet for their fans at $3.90.

rcw1 on Brisbane, to win by 13-18 points. Pays 6 bucks.

I will be surprised if the Broncos lose, they can trouble Penrith in the GF I think.

So then Freddy Fittler gonesky ...

ah the Blues.... ha h a ha ha ha ha

Wonder who they will give the job to??

According to News Corp journalists:

  • Michael Maguire: Premiership-winning coach in both hemispheres. Would bring a no-nonsense, hard edge to the team.
  • Danny Buderus: Knows the NSW system and has a creative football brain. Widely respected within the Blues family. Offers a calm approach.
  • Trent Barrett: Coached Manly and Canterbury at NRL level. Achieved success as an attacking coach at Penrith and now Parramatta.
  • Andrew Johns: Brilliant rugby league brain who thinks left-field. Would bring some x-factor to the job and ensure the system was shaken up.
  • Matty Johns: Has an imaginative and inventive philosophy. Some suggest Johns is a rugby league visionary.
  • Laurie Daley: Knows the pressure and expectation. Produced one of the all-time great coaching achievements by snapping Queensland’s eight-year dynasty in 2014.
  • Ricky Stuart: Passionate, raw and hungry. Stuart has previously coached NSW and would have his side fired up and wound up.
  • Craig Bellamy: Arguably the greatest coach of his generation. Would implement a robust work ethic. Drives his players to reach the next level.
  • Geoff Toovey: Tenacious and fiery, Toovey is big on culture. Played with heart and coached with dedication.
  • Paul McGregor: Tactically astute and widely respected. Meticulous in his preparation and has a knockabout style which is attractive to players.
  • Phil Gould: Has there been a better NSW coach? Always several steps ahead tactically. Understands Origin and what it takes – on and off the field.

This must have been one hell of a tense game that ended in a brawl, it certainly must have been emotionally charged.

NRL superstar knocked out in wild all-in brawl

Police are investigating a vicious brawl in which NRL superstar Josh Addo-Carr was knocked out in an indigenous rugby league tournament on the Central Coast on Saturday.

Good afternoon
Dally M winner Tamika Upton produced a nice kick and chase to seal a nail-biting 24-18 NRLW grand final win for the Knights against the Titans. What a champion player is Tamika Upton. She also received back-to-back Karyn Murphy medals. Well done. Great effort by both teams.

rcw1 on Adam Reynolds to win Clive Churchill Medal pays $8.50 and, on the Broncos, pays $2.38 head to head ...

rcw1 very excited... cannot wait for kick off. Bring it onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

SoO standard for sure … tough as …
Some nervousness by Broncos, dropped ball … to be expected by then in the big dance. If they settle in the 2nd half play % footy Brisbane are a good chance at the title. With 43% of the footy Brisbane and go to the sheds down 8 to 6 …

Great tough fast clean brand of rugby league, bring on the 2nd half …

Brisbane should be pleased with the score board.

Panthers need to find a way to turn field position into points or they lose this.

Right up there with the greatest of GF’s
No doubt in rcw1 mind about that.

2023 GF was the Nathan Cleary show.
Well done Penrith 3 fa outta 3, their greatest ever. Gotta hand it to em, unbelievable effort.
Ezra Mam’s 3 tries not enough.
