News Corp media article written by Dean Richie at 5pm today (22/10/24)

Pacific Championship television ratings looking exceptionally good.

Papua New Guinea's 22-10 upset win over Fiji at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium achieved a reach of 839,000 on free-to-air. It outperformed the second Test between the Wallabies and South Africa in Perth in August and the second Bledisloe Cup match in Wellington.

Figures show the Bati-Kumuls match secured a 40 per cent audience increase on the opening Pacific Bowl game in 2023.

Australia’s 18-0 win over Tonga at Suncorp Stadium secured a reach of 1.54 million compared to 1.24 million for the first Bledisloe Cup match in Sydney, with league’s national average of 698,000 dwarfing rugby union’s 477,000.

The second Bledisloe Cup match had a national average of just 283,000. The two-Test Bledisloe national average was 380,000. These figures are based on reach and national average audience and do not include subscription Fox or Stan.

Australia versus Tonga surpassed one million total viewers on free-to-air and subscription, a sharp increase of 49 per cent on the corresponding game last year between the Kangaroos and Samoa.

It was the most watched Kangaroo game since the 2017 Anzac Test against New Zealand.

International game doing wonders.

Australian Rugby Union might get better TV ratings if they won a game from time to time. Australia has not won the Bledisloe Cup series since 2002, that is 22 years ago. It is bloody embarrassing to our nation.

Breaking news:

The Bulldogs looking at Ben Hunt, after Phil Gould failed in a secret last-ditch attempt to poach Melbourne Storm star Ryan Papenhuyzen.

More news on the Ben Hunt saga...

The Dolphins have attempted to blow the Broncos, Bulldogs and Roosters out of the water by tabling a $1.4 million deal in a last-ditch bid to lure Ben Hunt to Redcliffe.
But the Broncos have upped the ante, with Brisbane set to dangle an additional carrot – a job after football – as the bidding war for the former Dragons skipper intensifies.

It has been reported that the Dolphins are the highest bidder in a four-way race for Hunt’s signature, turning up the heat on the Roosters, Bulldogs and Broncos with their attractive two-year package.

Their offer, believed to be around $800,000 for 2025 and $600,000 for 2026, would be palatable to NRL salary-cap auditors, who must authorise any deal put forward by Hunt’s prospective club.

Despite the Dolphins’ offer, well-placed sources say the Broncos are in the box seat to bring Hunt home, with their two-year package estimated to be worth around $1.1 million.

While that’s $300,000 shy of the Dolphins deal, it’s understood Brisbane will also discuss post-football employment for Hunt, who owns property in Brisbane and Byron Bay and has spoken of his desire to return to Queensland.
