Good morning champions,
England collapsed on the morning of day three to be all out for 325. Nice. England was 221 runs in arrears with Australia 2-130 in its second innings after of course rain set in forcing an early end to the play at Lord's!!!

Usman Khawaja was unbeaten on 58, while Steve Smith was six not out.

Have a very nice weekend.

Kind regards

Good evening cricket fans,
Australia are 5-197, with a lead of 288, but England in the form of aggressive short-pitched bowling are giving Australia 'what for'.
rcw1 is very tired. Good night Irene.

Set 371 to win, England was in disarray at 4-45 after Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins cleaned up the hosts’ top order. Starc had Zak Crawley caught down the leg side before yorking Ollie Pope, while Cummins got Joe Root edging to first slip and bowled a stunner to take the top of Harry Brook’s off-stump. Duckett survived an overturned lbw call from Starc to reach 50, with he and Ben Stokes holding the fort to keep alive a series-squaring win for England.

Consolidation ... at Stumps England need 257 runs to win and are 4 for 114.... Bring on the 5th and last day of the test...

Controversy reigns supreme ...
It appeared England opener Ben Duckett had fallen for 50 when he miscued Cameron Green to fine leg, where Starc held a low catch only to ground the ball while still sliding on the turf.

Under cricket’s laws, a catch is only completed when the fielder has “complete control over the ball and his/her own movement” and cannot touch the ground before then if a dismissal is to be completed.

The on-field umpires referred the decision to TV official Marais Erasmus, who ruled in Duckett’s favour. According to news reports, Glenn McGrath went off like a firecracker at this decision being quoted:
“I’m sorry, that is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever seen,” McGrath said while commentating for BBC Radio’s Test Match Special on Saturday. “He (Starc) has got that ball under control. That ball is under control. “I’ve seen everything this game has to offer. If that is not out, then every other catch that’s ever been taken should not be out. That is a disgrace.”

hmmmmmmmmmmm wish rcw1 had the technological know-how to cut and paste a video clip of the incident ....

Have a very nice Sunday.

Kind regards

Missed the catch controversy, went to bed cos I found the cricket boring as hell.

Short pitched bowling with fields set out to dry up the scoring.
Obviously bazball only applies when England bats.
As for the catch, the umpire deemed that Starc was not in control of his body.
Its always a judgemental thing, I have no problem with it.
At some point you have to conclude that the catch is taken, because otherwise if a catch is claimed then as is often the case, the ball is thrown or rolled back to the umpie, then it would be not out.
So by saying that the catch must be clean and the fieldsman is in control of his movements, it eliminates those instances on the boundary line where the catch is taken inside the boundary, but the fielders momentum takes them over the line. By throwing the ball back into play , they are sill not in control f their body , which is why they have to try to have a second bite at a clean catch inside the boundary line, otherwise its not a clean catch.

England needing 128 to win Edit Australia need 4 wickets to win
At lunch

The 1st session however will be remembered for Alex Carey’s controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow, who was out after haphazardly leaving his crease after ducking a bouncer and was run-out. Silly boy...

rcw1 a watching this one till the end....

Was just about to give up and go to bed when Smith dropped stokes, lucky I stayed with it. I turn the sound off when watching, otherwise would go nuts over partisan commentators.
Bairstow and the poms behaved petulantly over the runout, Carey picked up the ball and threw in one motion.
Great win, crazy game, need a nightcap.
where is that Lark I got for Christmas?

Disgraceful behaviour from the uncouth poms.

Rules are rules and Bairstow was fairly given out.

Suck it up guys, you would have done the same.

Sanctimonious Poms,.
Video has emerged of Bairstow trying exactly the same thing 2 days prior.
No spirt of the game discussions there, no cries of cheat from the crowd or other England players like Broad.

And here is one of the great pompus Macallum doing exactly the same thing to Paul Collingwood back in 2009.
Don't recall him , no withdrawing the appeal.
Collingwood looked as bemused as Bairstow did.

1688343606857.png

If you go back to the series of England in in New Zealand in Feb 2022, Colin De Grandholme was runout when he left his crease after being struck on the pad. The Poms appealed, but while everyone else was looking at the umpire, Ollie Pope rushed in and ran him out.
Who was the coach? Macallum.
Who was the bowler ? Broad.
Who was the captain? Stokes.
Once again, no recall of the batsmen or withdrawing the appeal.
There were no spirit of the game discussions under any of the above except for Australia.
Stokes saying he would hate to win a game under those circumstances, and would consider withdrawing the appeal.
When he had an opportunity to do it last time, no dice.
Hypocrites that have just taken the gloss off another sensational innings by Ben Stokes, and a great effort by Australia.
Oz had a lot going against them, loss of toss, losing their second bets bowler half way through the first innings, had to bat when it was overcast and the ball moving, and bowl when the sun was shining, and putting up with partisan approach of the English- jeez they are now worse than partisan Australians.
other takeaways - the decision to include Starc was highly vindicated, Anderson is a shadow of the bowler he use to be and should quietly fade into the sunset. Josh Tongue looks like a great bowler in the making, Todd Murphy to get an unexpected call up to the team.
The other question is which of the fast bowlers will be rested apart from Starc? We have had three fairly intensive tests matches in a short time, and I reckon even Cummins will need a rest at some stage.

Just a further bit of perspective.
heres the hard done by Bairstow stumping an irish player
Took a week before he knocked the bails off.
the ball aint dead until the umpire decides.

And a bit more.
Australia have won 5 of the last eight ashes tests in England.
England have only won 4 Ashes tests in Australia since the year 2000, and three of them came in the one series.

Also McCullum ran out Muralitharan after Murali had made his ground then walked down the pitch to congratulate Sangakara on making a century.

He apologised after the match but didn't recall the batsman during the game.

I can't believe the amount of stupidity exhibited by people over this issue.
heres a classic from the experts in cricket AKA barmy Army

Based on this interpretation, a batsmen could never be given out stumped if they overbalance ( see the stumping in post #97)
It would also prevent batsmen trying to steal bye on the last ball in a limited overs game (which often happens when there are small margins). if the ball is dead, no run can be scored, and the keeper would be prevented from running the batsmen out by throwing the stumps down.
Dumb as dishwater.
