Excruciating finish.
Not sure if OZ bowlers have learned too much,
Bowling short pitched balls to batters who know how to hook and pull is not that smart.
That bliokweWood can bowl fast, and his batting is not bad either!
I was dissapointed in Bolands performance, along with everyone else in OZ, i thought he would be admirably suited to English conditions, but he did not look threatening all that often.
Workmanlike is the best you could put on it.
Cummins obviously has little faith in Todd Murphy, did not bowl him till it was too late.
Hazlewood to come back in for Boland, but don't see who to drop for Green,
Warner is the obvious choice at one level, as he has had a lean trot with the bat.
But he is almost as valuable for his 1st slip fielding as his batting.
Green is outstanding in the gully, so perhaps that alleviates part of it.
be interetsing to see how things go in the next test.

OZ women's cricketers have lost the last three matches in a row to the Poms.
Seems the era of the unbeatables is waning, just as the Poms rise up.
One match to go in the deciding series for the Woman's ashes.
They definitely miss Meg Lamming, not just for her batting, but also her captaincy.
Perhaps its time for Alyssa Healy to give up the captaincy to concentrate on batting and keeping.
Her batting has declined since since she took over the role as captain.
On a brighter note, Michael Nesser hit 176 NO for Glamorgan .
Have to be a contender to come into the side in replacement for Boland with that record.
It is his fourth first class century, second in as many games, has taken 18 wickets in his four games so far, including a 7 fer.
Must be considered.
Maybe even dump Murphy and go out all pace attack given what has happened with the wickets so far.

OZ women managed to retain the ashes with a narrow win in the second ODI, but lost the ODI series last night after getting killed in the final ODI. It is their first ODI series loss against any country in ten years.
They were a little unlucky in that half way through their innings when chasing, the rain came and knocked six overs but only sixteen runs off their targets, but they have been largely outplayed after the first two wins in the test and first T20.
Healy had a poor run, particularly by her standards, and its time Megan Schutt, great as she has been , to retire and bring someone else in.
Her leg cutters are not as effective these days.
Perhaps we will see England move to the dominant position for a few years, they have some excellent players, including Cross who is one of the fastest bowlers in women's cricket these days.
Then of course there is India.
Just can't see OZ women continuing being as all conquering as they have been for the last decade.

Good evening
So then the Pommies won the toss... and put Australia into bat.
At the minute, after lunch 1st day fourth test, in Old Trafford, Australia 2 fa 116 with Khawaja and Warner back in the Pavillon.

Smith NO 36 and Labuschagne NO 34.
EDIT oh no !!! Smith gone, LBW, Wood struck, damn it...

Good evening

Didn't take long ):
James Anderson gets his first wicket of the Test with the first ball of day two. Pat Cummins spoons a catch to Ben Stokes at cover and Australia is 9-299.

Josh Hazlewood out about 1/2 hr later and Australia is all out for 317.

Starc strikes having Pommy opener, Duckett caught behind.
England currently 1 fa 18

Now shine has gone off the ball and its softer the Poms cashing in.
we are in trouble.
saint Pat Cummins looking off on his bowling, his batting , his fielding, and his captaincy.

England doing their best. Always going to miss Lyon. Will the rain force a draw?

Debacle last night.
Glad i went to bed when I did.
Wheels fell off the Oz wagon and Poms cashed in.
Zak Crawley played some great shots, but he has more luck than Marnus and Warner put together.
At one stage last night after he had got to his century, Cricinfo were suggesting that he was in control barely 60% of the time, the rest of the time he really had no control of where the ball was going. In one over I watched, he had three swishes at balls outside the off stump without getting a touch, then on the fourth cracks a boundary.
And just like Warner and Marnus are finding out now, eventually lady luck deserts you.
In the meantime he is batting like its a T20 and getting away with it.
Poor bowling, poor fielding, poor captaincy with nothing going right.
One lousy day can kill a game and a series.
Oz do not deserve to be saved by rain.
Mick

Pommies ontop for sure, after two days of the test match, and going into the 3rd day 384 fa 4.
Stranger things have happened before in test cricket and it isn't over till it's over. See how Australia performs tonight, rcw1 awaits with anticipation ... Rain, well, they are in England...

4 for 113 as I wake up just now.
Head and Smith failed. Labuchagne is still hanging around.

It's a beautiful day in Melbourne, but my Bombers were crap last night so I might still be unsettled.

That's nothing. I'm more than unsettled by the performance of Cummings as Capt of the Aust cricket team! I'm calling for his sacking as Capt., effective immediately. I've got to get another TV as I kicked the crap out of mine. I have never seen an Aussie team perform so out of character.

Apparently the English team like Cummings. That's got to be a sackable offense.

The weather in the UK Saturday is set to be terrible. Midsummer and the maximum temperature is set to be 16 degrees with heavy rain. There will be a few hours break from rain on Saturday but rain all-day on Sunday. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/forecast/gcw25uekz#?date=2023-07-22

Good morning
Dismal fielding performance by Australia dropping maybe five or so catches ... ):
But, bowled out England for 283 and the Aussies reached 1-61 at stumps, with Khawaja (26) and Marnus Labuschagne (2) both NO.

Day two tonight.

Kind regards
