American Politics

Came across Adam Kitzingers final speech to Congress. Didn't leave anything behind and left a warning to the US on the danger of following political liars.

How bizarre. For the vote for the Speaker of the House, the Democrat nominee (Jeffries) received more votes in round one (212) than McCarthy (203).

Political Liars?
Complete redundancy there Bas.
As Bobby Magee might have said, Politics is just another word for lying.

Pretty dark stuff Mull. You may mean that literally . Whatever.

Having said that I thought Adam Kzinger has been absolutely heroic in the past two years. His stand against Donald Trumps attempts to destroy public confidence in the 2020 election results and get his mob to overrun Congress and prevent the inauguration of Joe Biden has been pivotal to protecting the democratic process in the US. Deserves much respect IMV.

Now into the third round.

I reckon this could take some time to resolve. I don't know if this situation has occurred before. I suspect some GOP donors could be unhappy and on the verge of throwing some ketchup against their respective dining room wall.

It'll be sorted eventually.

And now round three. Best free entertainment going presently.

Ahh. 2 more years of congressional disfunction ? Karma is coming for McCarthy for moving into the speaker office before being elected. The media had been publishing stories that he likely didn't have the votes or the support since before the election. The country doesn't need or want another Californian in the post. Speaker doesn't need to be a member of congress. I recon they should appoint the Rock.

Have to wonder what kind of big fat payouts and bribes are coming for people to change their votes.

Oh how cynical Three sided One!

How crazy would it be for half a dozen Republicans to vote for the Democrat nominee ? It seems as if the hard right group are determined to exercise control over the Parties direction.

I wonder if the Democrat nominee would even accept the position if this happened ?

A Democrat-turned-independent Pennsylvania state representative was elected Speaker of the state’s House of Representatives on Tuesday, after several Republicans joined with Democrats in a surprise turn of events.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Mark Rozzi, who has served as a Democratic member of the House for a decade, said he would govern as an independent, after the closely divided chamber voted 115-85 to elect him Speaker. Rozzi is the first independent Speaker of the Pennsylvania House.

“We’ve heard from the people of Pennsylvania, the press and even members in this own building about how we need to find a new path forward,” Rozzi said, after being sworn in. “My entire career I believe I have worked to find that path, and I am honored to have your trust today to serve as Speaker.”

A pivotal part of the acrimony in US politics is the belief by probably 20-30% of the population that the elections results were rigged. Most of these stories have revolved around convoluted conspiracies around rigged voting machines and adjusted election outcomes.

NONE of these conspiracies has ever been proven in court.

Why is this so ? Check out this indepth investigation into the person at the centre of these computer conspiracies.

The man behind Trump World’s myth of rigged voting machines

Computer programmer Dennis Montgomery was the source of an early version of the bogus claim that Donald Trump was cheated by a massive vote-hacking scheme. He’s pictured here in a 2009 mug shot after his arrest on charges of writing $1 million in bad checks to a Las Vegas casino. SOURCE: Riverside County, California, Sheriff’s Department.

Central to the election-denial movement is a galaxy of conspiracy theories about vote-flipping supercomputers. The myths can be traced to Dennis Montgomery, a programmer and former U.S. intelligence contractor. Judges have called him a fraud and a perjurer – and he has a history of promoting tall tales.

The conspiracy theory seemed to come out of nowhere: Dark forces had hacked into voting systems nationwide to rob Donald Trump of the 2020 U.S. presidential electio
The myth started spreading even before the votes were counted. One of the earliest versions, from an obscure right-wing website, had a hero: Dennis Montgomery, a computer programmer and self-described former contractor for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The writer cited Montgomery’s claim that he had built a supercomputer called the Hammer years ago as a U.S. government surveillance tool, along with software called Scorecard that could be used to manipulate election results. Now, Montgomery alleged, someone had hijacked the technology and was using it to steal the presidency for Joe Biden

In the election’s febrile aftermath, these and other unproven claims about Hammer and Scorecard went viral and morphed into a grand global conspiracy theory about how a host of sinister characters, often tied to China, had hacked voting systems to flip votes from Trump to Biden. As the stolen-election fiction spread, so did its repercussions — frivolous lawsuits seeking to overturn the election; threats of violence against election workers; and well-funded campaigns to rid America of voting machines. Two years later, about two-thirds of Republicans say they believe Trump was cheated, Reuters polls show.

It's the way it should be. Everyone placing a meaningful vote. The current system of just voting for your own party is silly and somewhere in the past 100+ years someone should have let it be an open vote. Whatever political points scored by making the GOP look a little silly for a week in 2023, is going to be long lost by any election in late 2024, so the dems may as well just pick the republican they want as speaker and vote for him/her. That will have more impact in a 2024 election.

No wonder congressional approval sits in the 20% range.

It isn't as cut and dried as that Triangle. It is quite possible for party members to abstain from voting. It is even possible to cross the floor. In theory party whips attempt to ensure all Repubs/Democrats vote according to the desired outcome for the party. In practical terms if that wasn't successful almost all the time a government couldn't function. It wouldn't have the required level of voting support to ensure ongoing stability.

In this situation the Republicans have a serious problem with extremist outliers undermining their capacity to appoint a speaker. As you may be aware the position of Speaker in the House of Congress is a very important role. It is not ceremonial or just a judge of conduct. The Speaker is in fact 3rd in line to the President.

At some stage there will need to be a Speaker. One possibility is a independent speaker who enough Repubs and Democrats can live with. It could be a Repub speaker who the Dems flag through. I don't think having a Democrat Speaker is viable .

The situation with this core of extremist Republican members also bodes badly for the next two years. The risk of Government shutdown has risen sharply.

US Joint Chiefs top brass General Mark Milley was called to testify to the Jan 6th Committee. The full transcript of his interview has now been released. He was not a happy camper.

In Milley’s own words: The most striking moments from his Jan. 6 interview

The Joint Chiefs chair told investigators he was worried that America's enemies saw an opening based on the chaos at the Capitol.

The military’s top general was so alarmed by the events of Jan. 6 that he ordered his staff to immediately start collecting “boatloads” of relevant documents for future investigations — even classifying some so that only certain people could see them.

“I knew the significance, and I asked my staff, freeze all your records,” Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Mark Milley told members of the Jan. 6 committee.

The general said he went to extraordinary lengths to classify the documents “at a pretty high level” to ensure that only those “who appropriately needed to see it” could access it.

The revelation was one of many that Milley made during a Nov. 17, 2021, interview with committee members.
The 300-page transcript of the interview released this week is chock-full of wild anecdotes — not just from the day of the Capitol assault, but from the two years he served as then-President Donald Trump’s top military adviser.

From the very start, Milley makes clear that he is appalled by the events of that day. The general spoke at length about the oath he took as an officer and said he believes the insurrection was no less than an assault on the Constitution.

“The events of January 6th, in my personal opinion, were a horrific day, a tragic day in the history of America,” Milley said, according to the transcript. “So what I saw unfold on the 6th was disturbing, to say the least.”
