$2 Wine

Roughly half the wine I drink is cleanskin; it helps to have a local shop (wouldn't buy from a large chain) & to get to know the owners, as amongst the lot there is always a bargain or two.

Recently I decided to give GetwinesDirect a go. They always bombard our office fax with "great deals" and I was very, very happy with the pick ups.

Cockatoo Ridge Shiraz 2001 for $7.90 a bottle and Normans Old Vines Cab Sav for $9 bottle + $5 each for postage of each carton. Both nice, easy drinking wines for that price. I had been ordering from the cellar door from Marg River winery but very happy with these lastest ones. Great quaffing wines for medicinal purposes during the week.

But I have heard some others would never order through them again. Not true "cleanskins" anyway.

Ok,Warney, you said that you worked at a winery. Can you please tell me why egg is used in the making of the wine, such as Nottage Hill,or Banrock station wines ,at the back of the label its says egg traces may remain,or such. Can you please explain.
Thanks :p:
egg whites are are used as a fining agent to remove tannins, allthough it is pretty much removed before bottling they have to put it on the label for legal reasons.the US labels also have a pregnacy warning by memory, the surgeon general warns ect. ect. blah blah blah now you cant sue us

egg whites are used for "fining" the wine - it clings on to various contaminants and impurities and is then filtered off - very commonly used

Thanks guys,
I actually thought ,that the egg thing was found only on cheap wine, althought what we drink is not necessarily that cheap.Feel better now. :p:

agreed!!! apart from the noxious palate and rancid aftertaste the lack of refinement of the wine itself means one thing! mega hangovers

lets all post our all time favourite wine:

Ill go first

Stonier Reserve Pinot Noir 1999 (red)

That's mine too!
Bad luck it is so expensive, so I have to live with the memory.

I managed to get a bottle a while back for about $40(not a bad price!)

other good pinots at this price include:

Brook Eden 2001

Sandalyn Estate Pinot Noir 1999/2000 cuvee (hard to find but absolutely memorable)

Paringa Estate also produces excellent wines!!

Aldi have got a $4.99 botlle of port. Bought one expecting to eventually use it for lawnmower fuel and was pleasantly surprised. Far better than any of the under $10 ports!

A little ol wine drinker me !!!!!!!!!!!

I popped into Danny Murphy's tonite to buy a bottle of French champers,as a present for my daughters cross country trainer, and literally walked right pass the cheap plonk.....Chardonnay @ $1.99 or $23 bucks something for the case ,I saw this guy load up his trolley with 6 cases of chardonnay! the man is a fool! ....But yep there it was .What actually suprised me was the chardonnay was 13% proof, not bad, even if it does supply the hangover! :bier:

Has anyone asked for a taste, for 2 dollars even if you have to pay wouldn`t it be worth paying just to be sure, after all it could be worth buying.

OK, is this $2 stuff drinkable ?

just about finished my $5 clean skin chardonnay from LL :(

That was definitely surplus good stuff bottled to clear :D :D :D

Easily as good as most $10 -$15 wine IMHO

The industry seems to be in a bit of trouble at the moment and from various reports and stories I've read, the next 2 to 3 years could be quite disastrous for a few producers and wine makers. The problem seems to stem from the glut of grapes and the massive oversupply of wine in the last few years, the Fosters/Constelationization of wineries, declining sales in the US(UK is still a strong market, but growth has slowed considerably) and add to this the two "wine investment" schemes/scams that went bust in the last year or so and it spells troubling times ahead for the industry.

The last few vintages in SA, WA and VIC, especially the 2004, 2002 and 2001 were outstanding vintage years for wine. 2005 was seen as a good, but not great vintage, but I digress, what it all really comes down to is simply the law of supply and demand. Unfortunately for the growers/wine makers at present is that they're on the wrong end of the curve and that it doesn't look like improving in their favour anytime soon.

It's a great time to be a wine drinker, not sure whether the same can be said for the majority of growers and producers. There's some great bargains to be had in the premium/super premium wines at present at good prices.

Tried it tonight...I'll be back for a dozen. It was very, very tasty (for $2) more like a $7 or $8 bottle.

Very, very pleasant! Good night all!

Had some the other week.
Spewed up twice in the morning with a hang over from hell.
Do yourself a favour and don't touch it

I spewed up all the next day till 7pm that night, not sure if it was the $2 red wine or all those cocktails I down in between. Nothing like responsible drinking :banghead:

Could have also been the after effects of lazyin' around in a hot tub.

Ohhh what a house party that was, a night to remember or to forget, I am not sure which one it is.

Better do what Mel did and check myself in to AA :p:

If $2 wine is that bad and gets negative publicity, we might be able to get on special for $1

As to hangover, drinking in moderation helps, also when eventually Australia will be converted to religion that doesn’t allow consuming alcohol.

All of the sudden $2 wine will be able to fetch multiples of that on black market, with gun thrown in for free.

well at the IGA near where I live they are selling this wine for 4.99.
Apparently warehouse clearing, all clean skins,I`m assuming that its the same as the 2 dollars.

I'm not sure...the $2 says exclusively for Dan Murphy's??

Anyway, I've been back for my second carton! It's great stuff....the red and white.
