$2 Wine

Happy said:
Can wine age in bottle too?

not sure about this wine (no cork...screw top)... but it's very nice now anyhow...nicer than plenty of $6-7 bottles I've had...and nicer than cask (imho!) :2twocents

Tonight I learned that after 2 glasses of wine I could not taste any difference between a glass of $2/bottle no name wine and a $45 bottle.

Do I have a poor taste in wines or does it not really matter what your drinking after the first 2.

You're probably onto something there Tysonboss1.

Many years ago I was at a Xmas break-up party where I fella who had a couple of stubbies put a half full one down for awhile... I saw someone (it wasn't me, I swear) urinate into it and put it back. The guy picked it up and continued drinking without catching onto what everyone was splitting their sides laughing about.

True story, my word.

I am a cocktail barman. Have been for many years.
One day a customer was drinking Jimmy & coke. He had about half a bottle in approx 90 mins, and was getting a bit loud and crude. So for the next few drinks I served him straight coke and told him the drinks where on me. He did not notice the difference.
Another example:
A regular that has been coming in for years and all he drinks is Carlton Draught. I said to him why don't you have a pot of light instead.
His reply "I don't like that sh*t". I told him he wouldn't know the difference after a few pots. So I slipped a light in between. He didn't even realize.
After a few of any drinks you realy can't pick the difference. Unless it's quiet obvious. (dark spirits substituted for white spirits and vice versa).

Each palate is different. Majority of people can't tell the diff, esp after drinking a few. But put a good one next to a mediocre cheap oine and you can tell the difference - side by side comparison.

I have winemaker mates. With what's available out there you can get a good drop for low bucks. Cleanskins for quaffing (but be choosy here) and upgrade for special occasions (esp the first bottle or two).

If you like it, it's good for you. If you don't, then doesn't matter how much you pay. Our good ones are sitting under the stairs aging a bit.

I've known people who smoke ciggies who cannot tell the difference between wines. My favourite little chinese bottleshop owner convinced me to buy a "Teusner 2007" yesterday as he reckoned it was the best blended red going around. I had already spent $30 on my favourite bottle of wine (Penfolds bin 138, 2003) and the Teusner was $25. I poured them together, the colour and bouquet was almost identical although the 138 was slightly darker. To cut a long wanky story short the 138 was still better, not so acidic and better matured too. Summary there is no substitute for well balanced aged wine.

To continue this line of $2 wine conversations - two things. 1. Don't buy expensive wine if you are already drunk, it doesn't taste any different. 2. Buy the wine you like, not the label/reputation you need for status. 3. Buy two bottles at a time and compare them, you may be suprised.

To give an example of #3 I recently purchased 2 cases of $7 reisling (2007 Jacobs Creek) and it is every bit as good as one of my other favourites (Peter Lehmann Reisling $17-23), however nothing compares to an Art Series 2003 from Leewin Estate.

There is a cracker of a wine called the "Roo Runner" the slogan is "get the roo for under $2" haha. The way my folio has been going lately it's all I can afford

Yes, I can tell the difference between a $2 wine and a $20 wine, I can tell the difference between a nescafe & moccona coffee, the difference between driving a mit. magna & a bm. between coke & coles home brand cola.
Not much difference after 2 bottles though, so always pull out the big guns first & enjoy.
life is too short to drink bad wine
my name is cab sav

cab sav - do you like st hugo cab sav ? i think its a ripper of a wine. a bit too expensive for every day drinking, but a good one to put away and save for a special occassion.

Yep, spot on. Dan Murphys have a special on Hardys 2002 Padthaway Coonawarra Cab Sav at the moment, $12.90 per bottle or $12.30 for six pack. Normally $20. Great Cab Sav. Also, mob in Adelaide, Skye cellars have 2006 Penfolds Bin 128 for $12 per bottle, min 6 bottles with 6 other $12 reds.
Normal retail $32, at Dan Murphys usually $26 per bottle.

After 2 glasses the gap between good and bad widens IMO ... the bad tastes at least as bad as the first glass whereas the good starts to taste divine.

Dont like st hugo .. but a shiraz like centenary hill (orlando/jacobs creek) for the same money is heaven!

If you cannot taste the diff between a $2 bottle :)crap:) and the good stuff thats great. Just stick to the tramp juice and leave the good stuff to the ones that can. :D

question is, where exactly do you get $2 bottles of wine from!?

Dan Murphys "clean skin chardonay" $2 a bottle, Crazy I know, I think it is because of the wine glut that australia has at the moment..... They can't be making much $$$ after bottling and transport.
