For those interested here is a link to a story about the United Nations announcement that they will be issuing their own reserve currency.

http://74.125.153.132

The UN will use a gold and silver standard instead of a fiat system.

It does not seem to say when it will be issued but indicates that the currency will be available to the public.

It will be interesting to watch the effects, if any, on markets after the issue as they are basically bullion coins already available.

K - that link just goes to Google? (And it isn't April 1 yet :D)

Interesting, however i cant find anything about the "Oro" being used or issued as a reserve currency...more like a UN feel good souvenir with some real (gold content) value.

Gold coins to bear the UN logo

World Gold Council article said:
Wednesday, 16th December 2009]
The United Nations (UN) has licensed the minting of gold bullion coins bearing its logo to provide a "public option" world savings currency.

According to the Vancouver Examiner, Oro gold coins are hoped to contribute to making the UN better funded by 2015, with revenue rising by ten to 15 per cent.
