Pressure grows to allow attacks on Russia with U.S. weapons​

Secretary of State Antony Blinken suggested yesterday that the Biden administration could be open to tolerating strikes by the Ukrainian military inside Russia using American-made weapons. He said that the U.S., which has so far opposed such attacks, would “adapt and adjust” its stance based on battlefield conditions.
 
In the U.S., a plant still under construction in Texas will soon turn out 30,000 artillery shells each month for the 155-millimeter howitzers that have become crucial to Kyiv’s war effort, roughly doubling current U.S. output. Here’s a look inside.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the presence of more than 90 countries at his Swiss peace summit shows the world stands with his nation and an end to the war is now closer. Russia, which is not participating has dismissed the conference as a waste of time. Kyiv’s allies say it’s a useful step towards peace but acknowledge that at some point, Moscow will have to be brought to the negotiating table. SBS' Janice Peterson spoke with Federal Minister Bill Shorten who's in Burgen-stock as Australia's delegate to the gathering.​

Professor Joshua Shifrinson is another scholar who believes that Western policy played a key role in Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. Back in 2016, he wrote a prize-winning article based on detailed archival research, which showed that “the United States repeatedly offered the Soviet Union informal assurances against Nato’s future expansion into Eastern Europe.” More recently, he has claimed that “Nato enlargement is essential to understanding how we’ve ended up in this mess.”
