Ukraine War

Russia would have to be stupid to start war with Europe. I don't see that happening.
Hasn't Putin already done that in 2014, then escalating in 2022?
Oh that's right. It's a SMO not waging war, nothing to see here...
If we wanted to help we should retool for war and build a bunch of ordinance.
It would help us and help them.
Aren't we still in cahoots with France making shells or has that finished?
From the article:
Mr Lecornu said the aid would be "significant" and "an effort that will be kept up over time", with the first deliveries slated for the first quarter of 2023.

As lawmakers returned to Washington from a two-week break on Monday, Johnson gave no word of any plans for a vote on Biden's supplemental request.
Pompeo, a former House member, issued a public letter on Monday urging Johnson to bring up the bill in the House.
"We encourage you to lead with conviction and bring the aid package to a vote," Pompeo said in a letter written with John Walter, president of the Hudson Institute, where Pompeo is a fellow.

About xxxxing time

Last week, before Ukraine aid passed, Fox News itself posted an op-ed column with the stark headline: “Marjorie Taylor Greene is an idiot. She is trying to wreck the GOP.”

On Friday, Ken Buck – a recently retired conservative congressman who did much to name Greene “Moscow Marjorie” – spoke to CNN.

“Moscow Marjorie has reached a new low,” he said. “You know, during the Russian Revolution, [Vladimir] Lenin talked about American journalists who were writing glowing reports about Russia at the time as ‘useful idiots’.

“And I don’t even think that Marjorie reaches that level of being a useful idiot here. She is just mouthing the Russian propaganda, and really hurting American foreign policy in the process.”

France deployed troops from its 3rd Infantry Regiment, a part of the Foreign Legion, to support Ukraine's 54th Independent Mechanized Brigade in Slavyansk. Former US deputy undersecretary of defence for policy, Stephen Bryen, made the claim in an article published by the Asia Times. Around 100 French Foreign Legion soldiers had arrived in Ukraine, with plans for approximately 1,500 more to follow. These troops were being posted directly in a hot combat area and were intended to help the Ukrainians resist Russian advances in Donbas.

I think Sweden and US may have done the same. A lot of Canadian there as well.

Ukrainian air campaign against Russia's oil refining industry has been extremely effective, the magazine "Foreign Affairs" assessment states.

Hitting Russian refining infrastructure only brings benefits with little or even no risks. Russia's loss of refining products even pushes the Russian regime to extend crude oil exports and by doing so rather even pushing down crude oil prices, because it cannot store oil in large quantities. Shutting down oil wells is even more expensive. Repairs are costly, sometimes not feasible as well as time-consuming. Spare parts are in most cases on sanction lists. While oil prices worldwide are unaffected by the Ukrainian campaign, prices for refined oil products in Russia are rising. Aside from a higher strain for the war industry as well as for the army (logistics chains are getting even longer), it will actually cause much higher inflation as Russia has already.

Due to the re-import of refined oil products, Russia will be exposed to normal market prices, which for the average Russian, who never had to experience anything like this in the past - neither in the Soviet Union nor even in the 1990s - will come as a shock. What the news magazine forgot to mention is the political strain.

Russian oligarchs are increasingly losing money on an epic scale. The Putin system, however, is based on two pillars: favors and force. It was quite common that Putin compensated oligarchs for loyalty when those got hit by foreign sanctions, but those means are not infinite, especially during war. The less favors can be used, the more the regime has to use force, which in return will have a backlash. In the end, more and more people in the systems will silently question the soundness of Russia suicidal path and might feel increasingly inclined to ditch the dictator in the Kremlin. The fragile scale is getting out of balance. Either way, it only proves that Ukraine's air campaign against Russia's refining industry is an excellent strategy to exert massive pain against the the Russian regime and population. It is not a fast weapon, though we can already see the first side effects, but it is merciless one, which will yield tremendous results over a foreseeable period of time. In the end, Ukraine's air campaign has evolved into the most effective sanction against Russia. It is unlikely and would be unwise to give up on this.

May 10, 2024 - Ukraine has sent in reinforcements and evacuated thousands of civilians as Russian forces seek to open up a new front in their invasion by advancing towards Ukraine’s second-biggest city, Kharkiv, which sits around 25 miles from the Russia border.

Ukraine’s defence ministry reported that Russian troops had tried to “break through” defensive lines near a small town called Vovchansk, close to the border, at about 5am – after Moscow’s forces had spent the night shelling the area with highly destructive guided aerial bombs.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that Russia “launched a new wave of counteroffensive actions in ([northern Kharkiv region). Ukraine met them there with our troops, brigades and artillery.”

“But our military and military command were aware of this and anticipated their forces to meet the enemy with fire,” he said. “Now there is a fierce battle in this area. … I think as of now we have stopped the enemy with artillery fire.”

Russia calling for the western troops to enter the battlefield.
Saw a General's comment that Russia has an advantage over us now. They were forced to modernise and now have the tactics to beat us on the field. They have adapted to the warfare currently being used through hard lessons.

Realistically the west is unprepared in the numbers of troops we need with about a 5-10year prep time
