UBS: Australia's most crowded trades

UBS always has great insights in their thematic equities notes. Today, their note is about crowded trades and there appears to have been a noticeable shift in favour of utilities, real estate, and industrials stocks. The case in point here is that the three most crowded ASX 100 trades are: Goodman Group (ASX: GMG), Brambles (ASX: BXB), and Charter Hall (ASX: CHC).

In contrast, the financials sector remains the most deserted trade. Note, these are crowded long trades.Among the crowded short trades, the top three place-getters were Harvey Norman (ASX: HVN), Nine Entertainment (ASX: NEC), Mineral Resources (ASX: MIN)

should be a good start today on ASX .... opening up 80+ points.

gold going nowhere. bonds flat but still high, iron ore resilient. oil stubbornly high.

The needle on gold turned from neutral to sell, now on strong sell. I got out of NSt on the day it spiked couple of days ago at open, didn't get the best price.

Rumours again on China stimulus, Dona ? should be good for materials?until the wind changes? Some data out of China today...good luck.

This morning's write up....

s It Time for Miners to Shine?

China continues to ramp up policy response measures, which is improving global growth sentiment. The overnight RRR cut follows a flurry of support measures over the past month or so including:

  • A 10 bp reduction in the benchmark medium-term lending facility rate
  • Lowered the floor for downpayment requirements on mortgage rates
  • Loosened the definition of first-time buyers to make it easier to secure mortgage credit in tier one cities
We're starting to see a strong response from the Resource space, with Singapore iron ore futures rallying past US$120 a tonne on Thursday, a level not seen since April 2023.

A materials benchmark like the SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF rallied 3.4% overnight to a near 6-month high. Other resource-related ETFs also posted strong gains including VanEck Steel ETF (+3.3%), Global X Copper Miners ETF (+3.2%) and Global X Uranium ETF (+3.1%).

I'm not even bothering with pre-open prices for stocks any more. Totally distorted by algos. Too fast for me (& no longer have live feed). A guide from ASX futures is enough

It's getting tricker. Thought there was something wrong with Commsec site as well, Dona. My sell was not in the queue on that site, but was on my site, Westpac Broking. Regardless of what it is, it is definitely getting more difficult to gauge, even the pre open prices unless you watch it to the minute. Do you have the times for opening? I mean, the staggered times....I have it somewhere but will have to search it....I'll google it.

Next week is option expiry, so the pre open will be really, really all over the place...watch it to the minute if you're trading. Anyway, today gave me a chance to sell most of my holdings. News and rumours can do wonders. Even coal miners went up despite a drop in coal price overnight.

Opening 10:00:00 – Staggered group opening times: 10:00:00* A – B 10:02:15* C – F 10:04:30* G – M 10:06:45* N – R 10:09:00* S – Z The ASX opens in 5 groups, grouped by the first letter of the ASX code, with each group's opening 135 seconds apart.

Option expiry next Thursday but I can't load it here. It's scrambled up....just google option expiry dates if anyone is interested
