The Voice

Yep, this was going to happen. Parkin blaming disinformation... There's going to be lots of blame shifting. Albo will be up all night trying to work out how to keep his job. His first step will be to blame Dutton and he'll eventually remove Burney, but won't be so stupid to do it next week. Marles might be gathering numbers too though.
Albo has to watch the old guard, Billy, Penny and Tanya will be having a get together IMO.

true, the rest of the circus then. (support staff)
not even that. public servants make up < 50 per cent of workforce... and they're a mixed bag.

More , to my eye, its a town of smug bourgeoisie, and a few battlers, whose economic pathway is less imperiled by the fluctuating uncertainties faced by working class and rural Australians.

but all that's by the by.

“No other culture is as resilient as us, 60,000 years “. What sort of BS is this talk? From indigenous peoples that are as diverse as myself. My dad Is Italian from a country that has been invaded by multiple nationalities, my mother is Australian of English and Dutch heritage which both countries have been invaded by multiple countries. Why can’t these political indinigous political people see this?

About 30, which seems hard to believe. But I think a lot would have died from tribal conflict.

Western life expectancy was pretty low back then too, so maybe need a relative comparison.

On the surface of it, if the British hadn't colonised Australia, the Aboriginals would still be living under bark huts and hunting and gathering like they did for the previous 60,000 years. So, we've doubled their life expectancy. We could easily extend it further if they caught up with Western civilisation, if they just joined in.
If the British hadn't colonised Australia, Spain, France or the Dutch would have and the aboriginals would be living like the natives in Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil, Argentina etc.

Indonesia - kupang, anyone - or Japanese (1941 ) ...., Portuguese?

Watching the Prime Minister speech, OMG how old is he? He sounds like a 10 year old that just had his lollipop taken from him 😢
They're absolutely deluded and live in their own world.

This speech is embarrassing. A total failure in campaigning and governance. They had everything in their favour, including Little Johnny giving his voice, etc.

I hope Dutton is respectful in his response.

What a waste of $400m and six months of diversion from the real issues.

The country’s three highest earning electorates, Wentworth, Warringah and Mitchell have returned Yes votes of 63, 62 and 62 per cent respectively so far, a pollster told the ABC’s broadcast.

Electorates with the lowest household income, Hinkler, Lyne and Grey, returned Yes votes of 21, 21 and 27 per cent.
.
a trainwreck, mismanaged by the elites? They're the ones creating division.

It's been a common saying throughout.
I'd expect life expectancy to be highly correlated to life choices.
When I looked into it a few weeks ago what turned up was the top 4 causes of death among Aboriginal people are all more likely to occur in smokers and in 5th place is suicide. Noting for context that at 41%, the rate of smoking among Aboriginal people is dramatically higher than among the rest of the population.

Now I'm not going to be too harsh on someone who's addicted to something, an addiction is just that an addiction, but at the same time it's hard to see how a Voice to parliament is going to help given that Labor's general solution to that exact problem, smoking, is high rates of taxation, covering the entire pack in health warnings and the latest one printing health warnings on each individual cigarette whilst moving to outright prohibition on vaping.

That issue alone is a massive contradiction. On one hand saying we need to consult and hear the people, on the other hand implementing among the most hardline policies anywhere in the world without a word of consultation with those affected.

Personally well I don't smoke so I'm not seeking to defend it in any way but I'll argue that what's really needed is more effective education targeting Aboriginal people along with practical support, under proper medical guidance, to help people break the addiction and taking a "no blame or shame, let's just fix it" approach. As a measure that's almost certain to actually improve their health that seems like a sensible use of taxpayer funds - and it's not going to cost overly much anyway.

Pleasing scenes here in Brisbane as this fascist and racist attempt to divide the country has failed.

A vanity project concocted by Albo and his mates in a committee room in Canberra with input from tenured left wing University professors and academics with impeccable progressive views.
I no longer watch ABC so i missed his pathetic excuses (and the elites in general) but i look forward to the lame efforts to brand a significant portion of the population as racist for voting down a divisive attempt to elevate 3% above convict and colonial stock.

NEVER WAS, NEVER WILL BE.

Absolutely, I didn't want to go the whole gambit of scenarios, where the aboriginals wanting a voice to parliament, would be the least of their problems.
There is a reason Australia is called the lucky country, unfortunately those who have only lived here, don't have an appreciation as to the meaning.
IMO a more diffinitive conclusion to the aboriginal issue needs to formulated, rather than another look at me moment by another PM wanting accolades for rolling out yet another appology, for doing fck all to address the underlying issue.

First European Contacts

There is evidence that Europeans may have made contact with Fraser Island Aborigines more than 500 years ago. Lead, identified as having come from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain), was found in an old buried shore line near Hook Point on Fraser Island, amongst pumice released in about 1500. It may have come from the Christado de Mendonca 1521-22 expedition. His three Portuguese caravelles set off from Malacca (Sumatra), which was then Portuguese territory, to explore what was then nominally Spanish territory in what is now Eastern Australia. Records of Portuguese exploration were lost in the great Lisbon fires of 1755, but maps of Portuguese origin showing Fraser Island as an island survived in Britain and France.

With reference to: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-14/how-your-electorate-voted-on-the-voice-results/102956942#SA

Looking at those results this really hasn't been a referendum about Aboriginal people at all. Rather, it's been a referendum of the working class versus elites.

In every state it's the same story. The strongest support comes from the electorates occupied by elites, and the strongest opposition is from the working class.

The maps basically show privilege. That's who's voted Yes, the wealthy whose wealth comes from means that don't involve danger or hard physical conditions. That's the common demographic in electorates where the Yes vote has prevailed.

The political implications of that are orders of magnitude greater than this one issue. It confirms what many have suspected for years - the working class is increasingly fed up with the elites, and it was only a matter of time until they lashed out. That point has now arrived.

This will almost certainly have much broader ramifications, it's a political turning point in my view not simply the rejection of one particular issue. Rather, it's a rejection of the whole paradigm that revolves around the inner city elites calling the shots. :2twocents

What, there wasn't a high aboriginal population in Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Camballin etc?
One would think areas like those woild have a resounding Yes vote, it will be interesting.

Even areas like Broome, Carnarvon etc that have a reasonable sized white population and are heavily affected by the aboriginal issue, you would think will vote Yes as they would realise the obvious merits of the Yes campaign.

Talked to a lot of people I would expect No

Albanese gave an excellent and heartfelt speech considerate of the let down to many Aboriginals while giving them hope for the future.

PM with a heart in the right place long time since the last one not likely to see another for a while.

I hope those that put their efforts into improving outcomes for Aboriginals take this in their stride and keep working on solutions.
