Rugby League

Panthers and Storm have both shown why they are considered the two top teams in the NRL.

I think Cowboys should get a win against the Knights playing in Townsville.

Canterbury vs Manly on Sunday is the hardest to pick. I'll pick Manly as they are my team, but no great confidence.

beloved Cowboys through ... great game of footy in Townsville. Knights did come to play.
Ponga champion player....
Cowboys put it together, big change to their game once Chad Townsend benched. Bring on the sharkies.

Kind regards

I agree with you on the Dogs v Sea Eagles. I think it will come down to if the injured Turbo can spool up.

Turbo got through it but only just !

Weird game, Bulldogs all over Manly but they took their limited chances and nailed the win, Not very impressive but they get to play next week so they will take it.

I am please for Brooks, he finally played a semi final and gets to do it again next week, good luck to him

My picks for this weekend are with the heart and not the head..............

Manly for Luke Brooks to go around again next week and dare to hope for a GF

Cowboys for our resident Townsville tragic ;)

Very ordinary performance from Manly. They have to make huge improvements in their defence if they ever hope to be title contenders.

It's hard to see anything other than Panthers and Storm wins next weekend. With all their troops, Roosters might have put up a fight against Storm but not as things stand.

A Panthers v Storm grand final ought to be a cracker.

yes indeed so, losing a couple in the first minute didn't help Manly's cause ... Manly played their grand final week before.

Tom Duffy and Tommy Chester, two local products need to be given opportunity now. Young blood in the halves. Give them shot at it preseason Payten. Sick to death of it. and while you are at it stiffen the resolve in the middle, fitness and defense are lacking over the 80 minutes big time, blind freddy can see it over the past two or so years... consistency .... didn't like that Drinkwater Cotter moment either. reckon the media will run that one... if not already.

Lost some big coin on the Cowboys.

Good morning

Week 3 finals:

Storm v Roosters at AAMI Park, Melbourne.
Bookies have the Storm at $1.30 head to head with the Roosters odds blown out to $3.50. Surely be a good bet that one for Roosters supporters.
Personally believe the Storm will ultimately win but, it will be a hard fought battle with nothing in it.
Kick off 7.50pm Friday.

Be the battle of the big men, reckon.

Panthers v Sharks at Accor Stadium Sydney.
Bookies have the Panthers at $1.24 head to head with the Sharks at $4.10
Personally rcw1 doesn't believe that the Sharks will be in this game.
Kick off 7.50pm Saturday.

Cannot wait.

Kind regards

Big Kevie gonkesky ... Broncos looking for another coach.

"The Broncos" brand cannot keep collapsing in a heap, bad for marketing $$$$

I do think there are problems within the club, too much talent for the level of apathy and disinterest shown.

No guts, no glory has stood the test of time, in footy that means no effort, no wins

Good morning rugby league lovers

The execution....

What's not said ...in Badel's article, as one would never know for sure unless a fly in the Boardroom is the implication that Bronco's management identified the auditing personnel that would pen a review report to justify big Kevie's contract termination and or make his position no longer tenurable, given his 2024 results. Interviewing the playing cohort is only asking for trouble ...

‘Savage’: Kevin Walters’ face-off with Brisbane staff after club review ultimately led to his demise as coach

Kevin Walters once famously declared he wanted to be “carried out of the Broncos in a box”. Instead, it was a behind-the-scenes showdown with staff that ended the club legend’s time at the club.

It was the powder keg moment that effectively ended Kevin Walters’ coaching career at the Broncos.
This masthead can reveal the explosive behind-the-scenes showdown between Walters and Brisbane employees following a savage club review that ultimately triggered his demise.

In mid-September last year, Walters’ Broncos flogged the Warriors to qualify for the 2023 grand final.

Precisely 12 months on, Walters was incredibly under siege, summoned to Broncos headquarters in the wake of a club-wide review that dissected Brisbane’s slide from grand finalists to 12th-placed also-rans this season.

Walters arrived and was joined in a room by his football staff, high-performance unit and other Broncos employees, including the club’s welfare officer.

The group were greeted by Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy and Michael Collins, the former New Zealand rugby executive and now Bond University sports chief, who presided over the review as an independent party.

The contents of the review was described by one well-placed source as “horrendous”.

Collins began outlining some of the feedback to Walters and his team. Anonymous assessments, including opinions from Brisbane players, were relayed to the Broncos coach.

The critiques were withering. The feedback covered a range of topics.

Question marks were raised over the declining standards and leadership of Brisbane’s football department. Walters was attacked for his communication style, inconsistency of message and lack of organisation.

Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News.

One staff member would spend hours cutting up vision each week with a view to it being used at the upcoming meeting of Broncos players to analyse the good and bad things they did in the previous game. When the footage ended up on the cutting-room floor, not being reviewed each week, the staffer felt it was a futile exercise. Weekly preparation began to suffer.

Upon handing over the findings to Walters, Collins and Donaghy left the room.

Rattled by a damning review, Walters went apoplectic.

Perhaps feeling a sense of betrayal, he delivered a savage spray to members of his department, questioning if they were truly behind him in his quest to break Brisbane’s 19-year premiership drought.

Staff were reeling in a state of shock. They had rarely, if ever, seen Walters, usually amiable and a happy-go-lucky soul, in such a distressed state, exploding with rage.

Several members in the room, including a female, believed Walters’ conduct was unprofessional and they left the meeting fretful, with the coach’s shock outburst reaching the ears of Broncos management.
In that moment, Walters’ grasp on his dream job – coaching his beloved Broncos – was slipping toward an untenable finale.

Meetings with Brisbane’s top brass followed.

Walters, contracted to the end of 2026, firmly believed he could turn the club around and argued for a chance to right the wrongs of a horror 2024 campaign. It was suggested to Walters that perhaps the pressure was consuming him; that one of the toughest jobs in Australian sport was becoming too much for him to handle.

Proud to the end, Walters was determined to soldier on.

He could fix the mess, put the premiership jigsaw together.

The club legend, who once famously declared he wanted to be “carried out of the Broncos in a box”, had high hopes for next season and did not see the bullet coming, not even as recently as 48 hours ago.

By complete chance, this reporter walked into a Chinese restaurant for a meal with friends in the Brisbane suburb of Milton on Wednesday night.

Sitting two tables away was Walters with his new assistants, Ben Te’o and Trent Barrett.

The trio spent the evening laughing and were at times engaged in animated conversation that suggested Walters was passionately building a rapport with his right-hand men ahead of Brisbane’s 2025 revenge mission.

Upon leaving the restaurant, Walters was far from a broken man.

He approached our table warmly and shook hands with the group. He joked if I had my tape recorder hiding and began a mock search under the desk, triggering a chorus of laughter.
This was not the behaviour of a man who had any fears about losing his job.

By 12pm on Thursday, I called Walters to organise an interview to discuss Brisbane’s 2024 campaign and his plans to turn the club around.

Walters happily obliged and suggested a coffee catch-up next week.

Again, no sign Walters was a dead-man walking … until six hours later, when he was summoned to a 6pm meeting to be advised he had coached his last game for the Broncos.

It is hard to believe that just 12 months ago, Walters was three minutes away from winning a Broncos premiership.

The 56-year-old was agonisingly close to being the Kingmaker who brought the NRL trophy back to Brisbane – just as he did as the Broncos’ star five-eighth alongside Allan Langer for the first time in 1992.

As he farewelled Te’o and Barrett on Wednesday night, Walters could not have envisaged their Chinese meal to plot a premiership fightback would represent his Last Supper at the Broncos.

Storm run away with a well earned victory over the Roosters 48 points to 18. Roosters were still in the game 12 or so minutes into the second half... then no more.
Penrith v Cronulla tonight

Good evening
Just been published, a Peter Badel and Phil Rothfield article:
The Brisbane Broncos called an emergency meeting with players and staff this morning (28/09/24) to discuss the replacement options for former head coach Kevin Walters. It has been reported that Michael Maguire is days away from being unveiled as Brisbane’s new coach. It also has been disclosed that Maguire has advised NSW League officials that he is in discussions with the Broncos.

All over red rover one coach leaves another coach post haste jumps into his grave. Madge will do okay and hold his own, but he wouldn't have come under the scrutiny he will be at the Broncos, rest assured.

rcw1 feels that this has been on the cards for a while now, just nobody knew about it for sure. Big Kevie dead man walking.

well then, it took 65 minutes for Penrith to get ontop of Cronulla who fought bravely. Gotta voice rcw1 disappointment in Niko Hynes performance ... for the Sharkies to get over the line they needed him to lift and take the team forward. Afraid that didn't happen, another timid and pedestrian performance. Expected much more.

With the benefit of hindsight, Trindall taking on everything was a big mistake.

Have a very nice Sunday.

Kind regards

I agree that the Sharks put in a good effort for much of the match.

I like to back the underdog, but I'm glad the Panthers are through because it sets up a classic Grand Final.
