Damm Rain is getting worse as the days go by.

been about 10 days now since we last saw the sky....
It's been raining pretty heavily over those 10 days, and with more rain predicted we have blocked drains everywhere within the CBD causing localised suburban flooding...Obviously the usual High Tides are compounding the problem...

For those of you that don't know the Cairns area, most of the main flood areas are near Smithfield, North of Cairns....

Could be a bit of carnage if we start getting regular "really High Tides"..

Stay safe @DrBourse.
Wild times there by the looks … bloke.

Tinaroo Dam at capacity … will need to release water soon if not already … that water will flow into the Barron, but shouldn’t impact too much down stream.

Tinaroo Dam at capacity … will need to release water soon if not already …
It's an uncontrolled spillway (a very common arrangement) so water will simply be discharged by gravity so long as the water level's greater than 100% of FSL (Full Supply Level - the "full" level in simple terms).

Due to the nature of that, the more the level rises above FSL, the greater will be the discharge down the spillway but since that's not immediate, it does result in the water level being greater than 100%.

I don't know about the effects of the water causing damage downstream but the dam wall itself should be fine.

Best of luck to everyone up there.... :2twocents

This reveals the enormity of the flood event: Barron River Bridge, Kennedy Highway via Kuranda:
I assume the relevant road authority would be well aware of the situation with the bridge?

I say that because, without wanting to be alarmist, it likely isn't designed to withstand having flood water over the deck like that and will need a thorough inspection before re-opening unless that actually is within its design capabilities. :2twocents

Good evening Smurf1976,
Thank you for your post. Yep....

That bridge had a load and traffic limit for over 12 months or thereabouts, maybe longer.
Engineers discovered fatigue cracks in the steel. Subsequently repaired to take vehicles under 50.5t from memory.

So only one direction of traffic was permitted to cross at any one time (a pain in the arse ..) and there was a maximum tonnage applied to vehicles. That was lifted before the wet set in, maybe a month or so ago thinking, time gets away from us.

Goodness knows how the flood will impact on work already completed. I suggest there will be a problem of some sort ... Find out tomorrow guessing.

Have a nice night.

Kind regards

All better up here, now the clean up begins, most areas, apart from Cairns Northern burbs are drying out, patches of white clouds, no sky or sunshine yet....
Locals are waiting for Jasper to go further North, hang a right into the Coral Sea, reform, then come back and clobber Cairns again.... Faaark

Good morning

Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is expected to form and make landfall as a Category 3 at some stage later this week.
The Bureau has updated its cyclone track map which pinpoints where and how tropical low 05U is expected to form in coming days.

The system is now expected to remain a tropical low before forming into Tropical Cyclone Kirrily on Tuesday.

It will then intensify into a Category 2 by 4am Wednesday, and then Category 3 by 4pm that day, according to the latest track map.

Issued at 4:44 am EST on Monday 22 January 2024
At 4 am AEST Monday, a Tropical Low with central pressure 998 hPa was located
over the Coral sea near latitude 15.4 south longitude 153.9 east, which is about 430 km east
northeast of Willis Island and 870 km east northeast of Townsville.

The Bureau of Meteorology's updated track map, issued Sunday at 4.48pm.

Update: Townsville certainly in the path of Cyclone Kirrily, at this stage. Being doing some travelling of late re weather conditions impacting... such is life...

Should Kirrily cross the coast near or at Townsville on a high tide then the tidal surge will ....

I've got a funny felling about Kirrily. The vibe is not good.

Some Townsville suburbs lost power just now and most restored and winds are high gusting.

It has been upgraded to a Cat 3. Landfall tonight somewhere near me. Everyone seems well prepared. Maccas closed at midday. Mr. and Mrs. Shopping-Trolley unable to watch TV in Condon. What will they do?
