I think this puts the position in a nutshell. Maybe sooner, rather than later we will be having another election.

Even if, by some remarkable feat of patience, Ms Gillard or Mr Abbott can get an agreement, neither leader could keep a lid on their own backbench.
We would effectively have a Parliament of independents, where any cranky MP could threaten to resign at any time and bring down the government.
As the Government bowed to each fresh independent demand, the loyal party backbenchers would feel neglected and disgruntled. And, if any MP decided to retire or resign, the government would risk collapse.
