Folks,

Does anyone know why Google (and Yahoo) Finance sometimes do not update the ASX trading data? The data for yesterday, for instance, was not updated today and I think this occurs sometimes when it is a USA holiday but it is a little baffling.

Stupid question, is it possible to download historical data from Google/yahoo and then import it to your charting program?

If so, how/why are data providers still in business if there's free solutions?

Yes it is possible.

Time and reliability - They're in business because it takes so much time to download, check, massage reformat and import. Much easier to download a bunch of history, import - setup a data feed and away you go.

There are tools available to grab Yahoo/Google data daily, which at first glance seem like the way to go for free EOD. But at least 50% of the time data is missing, wrong or not updated each day. Pay for your EOD data - you've got better things to do than stuff around with data management.

Yahoo/Google and others are useful as one of many other free providers to check your data against from time to time.

I know nothing about Yahoo or Google ASX data, and so I know this is not answering your question, but it may be of help.

Cooltrader is a paid EOD ASX data service, but they provide the same data on a delayed basis for free. Data needs to be downloaded and then, depending on the charting software you use, it may need to be imported into the program or the format changed to suit. All up this would take, say, 90 seconds a day or so, give or take. Very easy and simple too.

Then there is Incredible Charts. Again, it is a paid service but the same data (and charting capability) is made available for free on a delayed basis. Because the data and charting is integrated into the same product there is no reformatting etc. This could not be any simpler to use.

If one needs EOD data but is unwilling to purchase it then I would highly recommend using ProRealTime for your charting package. ProRealtime is free (for EOD) and is a much better alternative to Yahoo.

Ultimately though, if you want to manipulate or analyse the data the only choice is to pay for it but for those who just want the ability to look at data on a chart I would use ProRealtime.
