Brokerage/platforms terrible in Oz

Caleb2003 and al others contemplating opening an IB account,

I had similar problems to caleb2003 and can understand his anxiety. However, as Steve states, it is imperative to list your IB account # when sending funds. I can also understand the problems it causes IB when this info is not listed.
It probably would be better if IB placed the money into a suspense account until it was claimed by the sender rather than just send it back to a bank. I had big problems finding my money but to Steve's credit, he came to the rescue and I had several people in IB working n it.

Caleb2003, I think you should have another go at it as I have found IB's platform awesome.

A big thank you to you, Steve, for your interest.

What IB pub relations fall down in, their platforms certainly compensates.

cheers.

oldpos:)

It is not just losing the money (which I still don't have back!) its the indifferent attitude of the helpdesk which has put me off mostly. They've not exactly bent over themselves to help and I have been very patient with them but theres no way I can justify their CS to anyone, they have some poor reps out there at the front end.

For those that have opened an account, what has been the easiest method to transfer funds to IB from Oz.

Seaking, I did a wire transfer and was able to complete it all by fax and phone with our bank.

I would have preferred internet transfer, but couldn't find that option on the application choices unless sending from a US bank.

Just make sure your bank understands that your IB account no, user name and preferably account name must be clearly marked with the transfer to IB.

Thankyou Sails. I went further with the application after ticking wire and it gave me a citibank a/c number with an Australian BSB so I should be able to use my normal internet banking program.

when you transfer funds to IB you have to fill out a form through IB`s account management program otherwise they wont deposit the funds into your broking account.

when you fill out that form, they will give you their ozzie bank account number.:)

I've been through all the account management page, but no sign of any such form. Must be missing something - or perhaps it takes a day or two after the funds have been transferred before that form is available?

I ended up going into my local branch and doing a wire transfer, cost $28, because the internet banking with CBA only allows for 8 characters in the details line and IB wanted A/C no, user name, and A/C name.

Steve, if you read this, maybe you can get IB to use BPAY or some other more user friendly method of depositing funds...

That's expensive, Seaking! We weren't charged for the transfer - even the fax and phone calls were to an 1800 number. I guess it depends on individual bank policies.

8 characters will be fine. Just put your IB account number, that will be enough to match.

I am trying to have a look at the IB platform in action.

I have downloaded TWS demo program but am unable to open the SPI200.

As far as I can work out, the code is AP, when I enter that into the first column the futures option is greyed out in the second column.

My only option there is a stock which I presume is a USA stock.

Can Steve or someone who has used the demo tell me what I am doing wrong please.

I have watched the tutorial, but I am not given the opportunity to do what is shown in the tutorial.

Over the years I have operated 12 other trading platforms but this one doesn't like me :(

Try typing in SPI

yeah, you`re sure miss your money going into your account if you dont do your form.

log in to account management, on the left click on Funds Management and click on Deposits & Transfers, now tick Wire and click Continue, fill in the amount of money and from which bank the money is coming from and voila, you filled in the form and the ozzie bank account will appear.:)

Hi Steve,

Are Aussie options available yet in TWS? For example, if I type BHP in the "underlying" column, then click on "options", it gives a choice of AUD and/or USD. Sep 2007 has both listed for BHP, but when the option chain comes up there is no AUD listed.

Also if I click on a BHP option (eg Aug 2007) where there is no USD, TWS comes up with a message that this is not available.

So far, the platform looks great!

Cheers

yonnie, I think I must have filled in that form when wiring the funds and the money is in an IB account - I'm assuming it's an Aussie account as it's in AUD!

I have been using IB and have been happy with it with the exception of ONE THING.

IB servers reset at midnight American eastern time, which is 2pm Sydney time. The downtime lasts 30min, so smack in the middle of the day from 2pm-2:30pm NO TRADES can be made. Will something be done about it?

IB has 3 servers- Asian, European and American. Most people that operate out of Asia would be on the Hong Kong server, which resets at around 5-6am.

I'm pretty sure you can have that fixed by calling the CS desk so they can switch you over to the HK server.

Yes, they are available. Make sure you are signed up in Account Management>Trading Permissions.

juw- You can change servers to Asia server. Just send a ticket to CS and they will switch your account over the weekend
