Oh my ... Alexander is in a tither...
"Mr Downer today was undecided whether he will contest the Liberal leadership.
"I am an unknown, and that is I am an unknown even to myself as to what I will do next, I'm still working that through," Mr Downer said at his Adelaide Hills home.
He said he could understand Peter Costello's "completely unexpected" decision not to seek the Liberal leadership."
Poor Alex. He doesn't sound too ambitious does he? It's not really rocket science, is it?

Spot on...
Regardless of Liberal rhetoric about Labor being a one man band, the fact was the Liberals in 2007 were a one man band.... and they themeselves knew it, which is why Howard was never really told to go.
As a true 'economic conservative' with a centrist view, Peter Costello must be the leader of the opposition. It could not be Abbott, Downer or Andrews. Unelectable extremists in my opinion. The only other viable candidate is Malcolm Turnbull and see what happened in Tasmania due to the pulp mill.
Left field candidate would have been Mal Brough but he has been unseated.
What a slaughter last night. People have taken prosperity for granted and this allows them to deal with the erosion of workers rights and the erosion of the 'fair go'. The three I - IR laws, Iraq and Immigration detention - have come home to roost for the Libs. Poor Johnny. When your time is up, your time is up and in gindsight he would have known that when a credible Labour 'populist' took the helm and started winning the 'battlers' off him. Kevin07 - will it be Peter11 in 4 years time? If not get set for a few more years with Kev, Julia & Wayne!
Now let it be known and understood, no-one in the Liberal Party was prepared to come out and say "the emperor's wearing no clothes", especially not lily-livered Peter Costello who was in the best position to do so. John Howard was treated as a god, his word was sacred, without question, above reproach.
A most unhealthy environment, destined for oblivion.
By saying he would stay on "as long as my party needs me", John Howard in effect was publicly stating that as he lived by the sword, so he would die by the sword.
Well that's just fine for him, but as a result it's left his beloved Liberals Party in tatters, destined to be in opposition for at least two terms maybe more.
Regardless, of his many achievements, this will be his epitaph.
Regards YN.
so what? are you spewing about that?
I reckon the funiest thing was all the money labor spent just getting into power.
WHO WILL PAY FOR THAT ROFLMAO
Enjoy your new democracy

What about Greiner or Kennett?
Just a thought.
Well they need to have a seat in Parliament (Federal), which neither do!
In standing for the leadership he has stated that he "would stand as a loyalist to the Howard agenda and declined to offer any new policy directions" (SMH). A truly deluded individual.
I cannot beleive i am hearing this... he is standing for the agenda that just got smashed in the biggest swing to opposition ever...
Strange!
Aussiejeff
You haven't got the Guy in this Suit Listed on your Poll... shame he has all the makings of a good leader...???? HB
