I have a question about determining an uptrend.

I have found the following definition:
"An Uptrend is a pattern of Higher Highs and Higher Lows"
In itself fairly simple and fairly easy to spot on a chart.

However, the above definition does not include any sort of time frame. I am guessing the time frame would be different depending on short, medium and long term outlooks.

So how do you define an uptrend.
Also do you only do this via sight, or can this be fairly easily calculated through Metastock or other either by looking at higher high and lower low, or looking at some other indicator?

Brett.
