TSLA - Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ)

my view is Tesla has acquired the luxury trendy flag and will keep it, so a bit like Apple vs PC/Android;
You will pay more for the same but have prestige attached and a few unique ways to force your habitsand prevent changing tribe..already there as you read this thread :)
Good on them..
I will stick to the cheaper and soon cheaper or/yet top leading edge Chinese or Asian brand when available.

I will never forget when Apple released their earth chattering face recognition on IOS to unlock etc the iPhones, whereas I had been using this features for 3 years on a so much cheaper HTC..
I expect Tesla will be the same once they lose their edge, via copycat or just bad luck or bad commercial decision,
->stick to being the premium brand
Tesla should remain premium and NOT sell cheap EVs , but I do not own shares right now so do not really care :)
If they commit commercial suicide selling good cheap EVS I will join the masses and buy!

For me it's not who did it first, but who did it best. Apple has always offered a system that is one of the most secure, and face recognition is a perfect example: Android and Apple face ID

As a business owner that uses a mobile phone for all sorts of business activities I need a phone that os very secure, easy to backup and easy to restore the backup onto new or replacement phones. Only Apple could do that for me, and has for the past decade.

Tesla is prety much the same for me, it is reliable, I can drive it anywhere at anytime with confidence, everything works all the time, battery life is excellent, safety is magnificent, self drive AP makes long distance driving easier than anything else I've ever driven.

I don't really like Apple, not that interested in Tesla products either. But I do like the numbers. I also think Tesla is very forward thinking and proactive. Their data mining and push for robotics does pique my interest a lot. Huge potential.

When I did my studies it was shown again and again that in many industries you have one leader and then a range of followers and the leader is the most profitable, think Coke, Pepsi, the rest.

If Tesla can maintain leadership then profits are assured. The concerns though are extensive competition (including new players) and government support distorting the market.

I like technology especially mechanical that is executed well and Elon blows me away not only with his ability to develop by organising and helping great minds but also his ability to run a huge and complicated manufacturing business like a startup.
I have bought and sold TSLA twice this year as it went down and came back up.
Does anyone else have thoughts about where it will go next?
I am hoping it will go below $100 as the economy worsens this year so I can fully invest my funds. I think this might be the last low at this level for a long time excluding the possibility of another bigger market drop in 2-4 yrs.

A lots going to hinge on any US bank runs the next few weeks. If liquidity days up then fed won't have many options.

Originally I was expecting a pump that we have had, then a decline as recession becomes clear to the masses.

It will be interesting to see if the Fed props up any bank that tips, or will they be left to wallow in the mire.

It seems incredible that Tesla have so much power to wield, from their ability to manufacture at such low cost, their supply advantages with electronics to their control over the charging network. I just wish Elon would make another awkward move publicly to send the price down faster, I want to buy at $100 and it is killing me waiting while Tesla moves from strength to strength because investors will surely wake up. Maybe I am too optimistic about its future worth, however after following the Japanese automotive manufacturing revolution and the lack of action by Western auto makers I believe I am watching it happen again with Tesla vs the auto industry.

To a select group the option now exsists to pick up your new Tesla vehical from the wharf. One port in Sweden.

Years back where 'Packer's Pecker' now stands car carriers would disgorged there contents on the way to dealerships where shiny ar$ed spivs would tell you how clever you were buying from them and how clever you were in 'cutting the best of deals' ... then they'd go off and spend ther hard earned commission on a fake Rolex in Bangkok. Ah those were the days.

It seems that some Tesla employees have been sharing private recording that tesla customers may have inadvertently made using the tesla camera system.
Tesla assures its millions of electric car owners that their privacy "is and will always be enormously important to us". The cameras it builds into vehicles to assist driving, it notes on its website, are "designed from the ground up to protect your privacy".

Key points:

  • Former Tesla workers say private camera recordings, captured by cars, were shared in chat rooms
  • Circulated clips included one of a child being hit by car
  • Tesla says recordings made by vehicle cameras "remain anonymous"

But between 2019 and 2022, groups of Tesla employees privately shared via an internal messaging system sometimes highly invasive videos and images recorded by customers' car cameras, according to interviews by Reuters with nine former employees.

Some of the recordings caught Tesla customers in embarrassing situations. One ex-employee described a video of a man approaching a vehicle completely naked.

Also shared were images of crashes and road-rage incidents.

One crash video in 2021 showed a Tesla driving at high speed in a residential area and hitting a child riding a bike, according to another ex-employee.

The child flew in one direction, the bike in another. The video spread around a Tesla office in San Mateo, California, via private one-on-one chats "like wildfire", the ex-employee said.
So how do you turn off the camera system to stop it recording everything, and then ensure that Tesla Employees do not capture your videos?
Having your vehicle permanently connected to the internet does have its downsides.

Other images were more mundane, such as pictures of dogs and funny road signs that employees made into memes by embellishing them with amusing captions or commentary before posting them in private group chats.

While some postings were only shared between two employees, others could be seen by scores of them, according to several ex-employees.

Tesla states in its online Customer Privacy Notice that its "camera recordings remain anonymous and are not linked to you or your vehicle".

But seven former employees told Reuters the computer program they used at work could show the location of recordings – which potentially could reveal where a Tesla owner lived.

One ex-employee also said that some recordings appeared to have been made when cars were parked and turned off.
Just shows you you need to be circumspect about what you do in and around cars.
Glad these "features" were not around from when I first found cars and girls.

You can manually turn off the "Sentry Mode" which is the feature that keeps the cameras on while parked, as far as the driving footage goes you can enable or disable sharing with Tesla.

You can also have it set up to automatically switch off sentry mode when at certain locations, for example I have it set up to switch off sentry mode in my garage, Because I don't want it to catch me in my underpants when I am putting my sweating lawn mowing gear in the washing machine hahaha.

One of the overriding reasons Tesla is very competitive price wise and will continue to make strides in that area is their focus on vertical integration of their manufacturing process.

Traditionally car makers designed cars and then bought the hundreds of parts from suppliers. Each of those suppliers were taking a cut of car cost as their profit.

Tesla has simplied its production process through the giant press system ( two large presses make the front and back half of the car) . They also produce their own electric motors and are systematically working their way through other items to effectively capture all the profit in making cars. This includes setting up their own Lithium mines and producing batteries. Can't remember the site but I did see an article which said Tesla is aiming to reduce manufacturing costs by 50% in the next 2 years.

Has anyone else been following The Elon Musk Show ? Currently running on SBS.

I "knew" about Elon Musks history but seeing just what he has achieved and the challenges he had to overcome to pull them off has been an eye opener. Well worth checking out.

Given the antipathy towards China from both sides of the US political spectrum, one might ask if this is a smart move by Musk?
It certainly makes economic sense, but does it make political sense?
Will the Biden administration look even less kindly on Elon Musk after his "liberation" of Twitter than it does now?
If relations between China and the US were to get even worse than they are now, you can bet that all the US owned things will be confiscated, as will Chinese owned entities in the US.
Interesting times.

Electric vehicle skeptics sometimes argue that the manufacturing and disposal of battery-electric vehicles like Teslas as well as reliance on coal to generate the electricity that powers them leaves EVs with a larger carbon footprint than nonelectric vehicles.

While that claim on the surface might sound absurd, it has a solid basis nonetheless because it has been proven that manufacturing and disposal of EVs results in significantly more greenhouse gasses than nonelectric models. However, that’s only part of the picture because most of the pollution associated with vehicles is linked to their on-road use over many years.

Here is a short video that explains the topic, with the science studies linked in the description.

Basically Yes EV's cause more pollution to make, but quickly regain ground through lower fossil fuel use.

The EV haters also normally fail to allow for the fact that EV batteries will be recycled at the end of their life into new batteries, so over time the EV's will get greener and greener as the metals are reused over and over again.

Currently, the only EV battery material worth recycling is cobalt. That leaves lithium, manganese, and nickel, among a host of other materials that may not be economically recyclable or require additional processing that drives cost. Feb 27, 2023

Check this out, the guy who co-founded Tesla and designed their batteries has started a battery recycling company, its Teslas plan to have a closed loop battery material system.

Like any new thing it takes time before a recycling industry can develop, simply because it takes time before the products start getting to the end of their life in enough numbers to build a recycling business at scale.
