Pets: My new dog is a whimp

Explod, I'm so pleased to know that he's working out well. I bet he's thanking his lucky stars that he ended up with you. I try not to think about what some dogs go through with owners who should never be allowed near any dog.

Re the exercise, if you keep it up, you will soon find that you yourself will be keen to increase it as you feel the benefits personally.
Having had German Shepherds for some decades, I value the exercise as much for myself as for the dog. If you incorporate some training amongst the walks, i.e. stay exercises, it increases the interest level for the dog and promotes the bond between you.

Are you going to take him to obedience classes? Agility? A lot of small dogs do really well in agility work.

Are you quite sure he is a full Jack Russell?

We had a dog many years ago, with a bit of dingo in him, and he never barked but he was good at snakes, wallabies and terrifying strangers, ( we lived way out bush )

Anyone who mistreats a dog is a mongrel. Good on you for taking Max in. He sounds like a great dog.

gg

I think you may be correct GG, he has a thick long tail compared to other russell's which flairs with hair toward the end as a pinted brush. He is barking a lot more now (it is a deep gravelly sound) and letting other dogs on walks know that he is looking after his new pack. Socialises with them very well but takes no nonsense.

And we are very lucky to have such a very well trained dog, still shys from me but he has that dog grin on his face now.

Thanks you Julia. We are just back from the morning walk. Near the beach so took the tracks and steps down, cliffs are more than 150 feet. Max absolutely loves this area, he runs well ahead then back up and down and would cover 10 k's to our three or so.

All good,

It is over 12 months since I took Max from the lost dogs home. Was speaking with Julia overnight who asked so just thought I would give the update as promised.

A perfect dog in almost every way, gets up to mischief if you let him. Not aggressive, everyone loves him and he is fit and in great health.

I think GG he has fox in him as he goes a bit mad at times, full moon thingo.

He still cowers when I have a shovle in hand etc and can be over timid at times. Some pr.ck certainly gave him some whacks in his past life and that will never be erased. My wife was never a dog fan but this bloke follows her everywhere and even allowed on her lab which the children cannot believe.

So if you want a good dog, the lost dogs home is the go.

And thanks very much again Julia

:)

I missed this thread last year, or I'm sure I would have commented if only to say good luck. It's funny the way some dogs favour either male or female humans, and it doesn't necessarily relate to their experience. Our old lady hasn't known a moment's ill treatment from anyone in the whole of her nearly 16 years, but she's still suspicious of men.

Good to hear Max's happy story. Are there Jack Russell races anywhere near you? His long legs might make him a champion :)

Congratulations and best wishes to all concerned

Glad to hear Max is working out so well for your family, explod. It was a good day for him when you found him at the pound. :)
