Can anyone spot the trend here:

Now let's consider a few things:
The US is not a recent creation, it goes back well before the chart.
Guns are not recent, they too go back well before the chart.
Men, women, black people, white people, being young or old, being short or tall are also not recent occurrences, they too date back much further than the chart.
And yet it's only recently that mass shootings in the US could be described as somewhat common. Whatever's changed, it's pretty clear that something certainly has.
