Unfortunately I would like to keep left-hand side from top and bottom row, and refresh plus close buttons.

I am not fussed about address window, it can be much smaller, but I have no idea if I can shrink it

Easy.

Right click in amongst the icons that you want to ditch. Go down to Customer Command Bar -> Add or Remove Commands...go through the list in the box on the left and select and click "Remove" for each one that you want to get rid of. When you're done, click Close.

To get rid of the "Live Search" you'll either need to modify your registry as per the link below (a little daunting perhaps?)...

My recommendation as a paranoid security professional is to do the registry hack yourself, or have a Windows competent friend do it. It's hard to trust tools downloaded off any old website.

I use Opera most of the time, it's a lot better than IE6. IE7 is really just catching up with browsers like Opera.

Not my cup of tea, how do I find registry?

If I could reduce size of address window, then all could fit on one line, but as it is now, IE7 is 2 lines ot top as default.

Start -> Run -> regedit

What you are seeing on the lower row is tabs. IE7 supports tabbed browsing. Test it by right clicking then "new tab". If you don't want the feature at all then thats easy too. Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Tabs/Settings -> Untick "Enable Tabbed Browsing" -> click Ok. Restart IE7, now they're gone.

I'm not sure how to shorten the location bar...probably another registry adventure

Does one have the ability NOT to use tabbed browsing in IE7?
I am one of the old scholl that prefer IE6 and the different windows. I often have up to 10 windows open at any time. I also use application software that works the same way and it's just habit.

TO shorten the address bar, you should just unlock the toolbar and then drag the right hand end of the address bar to the left. Lock the toolbar again.

Right click on a toolbar and choose lock the toolbar to lock/unlock it.

I was happy (no pun taken), but probably because I am not the best with changes in computers and programs.

Takes me a while to get things to work, takes long time to be able to tweak and ages to do it again when new program arrives.


So my feelings are not indicative of program usefulness, if anything qualifies for scrap heap, would be me not IE7

Hit a snag, after getting to POLICIES/MICROSOFT there was no INTERNET EXPLORER

We need to add the entries...ordinarily Windows registry should be left alone, but if you follow this to the letter you'll be fine.

Open regedit and go as far as you can ie. where you got in the picture you attached.

Right click Microsoft -> New -> Key -> "Internet Explorer", right click Internet Explorer -> New -> Key -> "Infodelivery", right click Infodelivery -> New -> Key -> "Restrictions", right click Restrictions -> New -> DWORD Value...the new DWORD should now appear in the large window pane on the right waiting for you to type it's name. Call it "NoSearchBox". Double click NoSearchBox, put "1" into the Valuedata field, click OK. Then, File -> Exit...you're done.

No more Live Search bar!

I just discovered a really stupid bug in IE7 that you might encounter. If you remove ALL of the "Command Bar" commands then the next time you start up they're all back again. The trick is to leave just one there. I've left the "homepage" option on mine, as this is actually a handy shortcut command to have.

My new window opens as per picture, so Yahoo has gone, but address field just got bigger and I still have 2 lines on top of IE window.

But sooner or later, there will be conflict and to get it right you will have to load it, and there will be IE8 and 9.

I assume that nobody uses IE1 any more.

Never loaded IE7. That's why I started this thread - to get others' experiences before I got myself into something beyond my level of competence to fix, having had some horrible problems last year in downloading the pre-release version of IE7.

Unless you added a plug-in you'll find that Firefox has no ActiveX support, so there is no where (or need) to turn it off.

This is as clean as I've been able to get IE7 so far...still 2 lines and the location bar fills the width of the window

Looks that window is designed to have at least 2 lines, regardless of what is on them.

In the era when average screens are 20" and up it doesn't matter that much, pity that IE7 restrict user's control.
