Is Global Warming becoming unstoppable?

Be more worried about China mining down there. They seem to be staking claims.

AI will be a bigger threat than CC over the coming decade.
I can multi task and be worried about a number of international democratic, economic and biological threats. ?

Watched The Last of Us tonight!

Will AI have to have a psychical presence to become a threat?

If not what is the thinking?

Not at all. But it very easily can.
We are talking about having control of infrastructure, information and quite probably drones and robots.
Consider the capacity unleash thousands of mini drones with a kill capacity to identify and eliminate particular people.
Already in existence. Just add another controller.

I concur with Moxjo. IMV AI will be, potentially if not actually, far more dangerous to humanity than CC in the near future. :(

Saw an estimate of 300 million jobs at risk.
Passwords and internet security.
Propaganda next level
Anything connected can be at risk.

But it will be the expansion and advancement that will throw the biggest curve balls. Ironically ai will probably provide solutions to CC.

I think I saw something about rice needed to be cut to reduce emissions. This was possibly the dumbest thing imaginable. Unless you want the world to starve. To me that's a bigger physical threat.

Cheers haven't followed the AI stuff

Meanwhile CC in the real world powers on and upwards.
Good luck with getting property insurance in these cities in the near future.

Miami and New Orleans face greater sea-level threat than already feared

Twin studies reveal that ‘acceleration’ of sea-level rise under way, leaving southern US cities in even greater peril

Coastal cities in the southern US, including Miami, Houston and New Orleans, are in even greater peril from sea-level rise than scientists already feared, according to new analysis.

What experts are calling a dramatic surge in ocean levels has taken place along the US south-eastern and Gulf of Mexico coastline since 2010, one study suggests, an increase of almost 5in (12.7cm).

That “burst”, more than double the global average of 0.17in (0.44cm) per year, is fueling ever more powerful cyclones, including Hurricane Ian, which struck Florida in September and caused more than $113bn of damage – the state’s costliest natural disaster and the third most expensive storm in US history, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).

The University of Arizona study, published in the Journal of Climate and reported on Monday by the Washington Post, provides an alarming new assessment of a key ingredient of the escalating climate emergency, particularly in popular but vulnerable areas of the US where millions of people live.

Existing projections by Nasa show a sea-level rise up to 12in (30cm) by the middle of the century, with longer-range forecasts even more dire.

....The threat from rising oceans hangs over numerous centers of heavy population located on, or close to the coast. Miami, and Miami Beach, cities often cited as ground zero for the climate emergency, frequently see flooding during high tides. Property insurance rates throughout Florida, which Noaa says has experienced more than 40% of all US hurricane strikes, have soared in recent years.

I guess the Gates' and the Obamas' of this world will be upping stumps from the waterfront mansions and heading to higher ground,eh?

How dumb are people building next to the ocean or on a flood plain? Miami is a classic example of total dumbness. Let's build high rise complexes on a sandbar 1m above high tide where hurricanes frequent... Almost as moronic as Venice, although it is a very nice town.

As for Obama and Gates (throw in Gore and KRudd etc) the hypocricy and lack of self awareness is mindblowing. The oceans are going to boil and rise by 10m, but my mansion on the beach will be ok...

Well lets be businesslike about this shall we? The developers and builders have long since left the room with their swag. So they don't have to worry.

The diversionary dribble about Obama and gates ? Just that.

The remaining reality is what will be the consequences for the millions of other people who are being affected by the rapidly rising sea levels caused by human created global warming ?

But not Obama and Gates?

Rubbish, you're probably just as big a hypocrite yourself.
xxxx xxx and be nice. Uncalled for and totally inappropriate.
I stand by my comment. Trying to deflect the reality of human caused global warmings impact on Florida/Miami with specious slags at Obama /Gates ect is just that - deflection and denial.

As of course is the needless slag at me.

I'm sorry I offended your high priests, I shall shave my head, dress in burlap, and cover myself in ashes in penitence

Clearly it will be like Moses in the Red sea, is waterside mansions will be immune while the rest of us are neck deep in boiling sea water.

Huh? A fair response to your 'diversionary dribble' slag at me.

What is the point of you continually posting up this climate fear pr0n? Are you trying to change the climate from behind your keyboard?

What are you actually doing to stop global warming and the ocean rising in Miami? How many degrees will the Earth cool and oceans subside by your actions?

Hint: ZERO.

The goal for these people is not to stop global warming, it is to scare people enough to get them to accept socialism.

Legard(IIRC) even said that out loud.

No the waterside mansions won't be immune, but you can bet that the people you named will have retreats on higher ground, unlike some others.

Why do I write in this thread ? Why do I challenge the relentless barrage of climate change denial that never seems to cease regardless of what is happening around the world ? What exactly will my contributions to this conversation do to make any difference to global warming ?

Fair questions.

Firstly regardless of what anyone else here (including me) says, or denies or trashes, rapid human caused global warming is happening. It's written in the ever escalating temperatures, the effects on ecosytems, sea levels, melting ice caps, extreme fire events the lot. However for 40 years, despite all the science and then the clear effects of this increase in global temperatures, a range of actors have undermined public response to this crisis.

They have attacked the science. They have disputed the meteorologists. They have recreated history to pretend current temperatures are not that severe. They trashed the scientists. Then they went after any citizens who accepted the scientific evidence and accused them of being alarmists and of course "hypocrites" . And all the time we are watching the world getting hotting and hotter with consequences that are already ranging from dangerous to catastrophic.

Any solution or solutions can only come with widespread public support of massive changes to our infrastructure as well as widespread adaptations to where we live and how we protect ourselves in an increasingly difficult climate. Realistically one of the biggest challenges of global warming will be the rising sea levels caused by warming oceans and melting ice caps.

How is public support created or destroyed ? Destroying it is done post by post around the word by people who echo the memes, the mocking, the false science and derision that we see on threads like this in ASF. Creating it is building a citizen community that acknowledges the reality of what is happening and and giving support to leaders who bite the bullet on the problem and look for best value solutions

ASF is a hostile environment for conversation about CC. It is largely a forum of fairly conservative investors. That doesn't mean all those people think CC is a hoax or a socialist ploy or really overrated. But they are also aware of the numbers. They realise that mounting any CC argument here is a short trip to getting accused of being a hypocrite, an alarmist, a socialist, or some other tag that never ever looks at discussing reality but aims to destroy the messenger.

However I believe ASF is an important forum of public debate and influence. In that context I'm prepared to highlight the factual elements of what is happening with global warming as well as promoting some of the solutions/adaptations.

What is interesting at the moment is that finally the economic arguments around the (possible) solutions to CC are becoming very obvious. Renewable energy is cheaper, cleaner and better value than fossil fuels. Protecting our environment makes sense if only to see the Great Barrier Reef stay alive. I had hoped that this economic reality might change some of the discourse. Maybe it has .

Renewable energy is cheaper, cleaner and better value than fossil fuels.

No doubt. Trouble is RE is a challenge to the built in fossil fuel lobby because just about anyone can do RE by buying solar panels for their house.

But unless the whole RE thing is done with a plan then lights will go out if there is not sufficient backup like hydro to get us over the inevitable droughts in wind and solar.

The transition has just been too piecemeal in Australia at least. Hysterical alarmists and vested interests have clouded clear policy thinking.

Hand it back to the scientists and engineers who have to make the whole thing work before it's too late.
