Cashless society

@divs4ever & @farmerge, I thought that all the copper networks had been shut down. I know that my parents kept the beach house connected to the copper landline as long as possible, but they eventually got notification that it was being shut down. No one in the Town has a copper line that works, we know because it i a small town and you get to know your neighbours. The copper line is still connected to the house, but there is no signal.

Same with my business, several years ago Telstra told me that the copper lines were being shut down and if I didn't go to the NBN system I wouldn't have a phone.

My parents had different providers because of cost and reliability. Mum stayed with Optus, the pricing was very good. And even though Telstra was more expensive, Dad went with them because Telstra had better range, he could use the phone when out fishing on his boat, and when mum didn't have coverage on land dad did.

However, every so often all networks would go down. Usually for a few hours but there have been the odd occasions where it has been several days.

I didn't mind too much, my brother and I just got on with getting things done.

Though, the strange thing is that on the Friday night there was no service at all, just a deadline. On the Saturday if anyone tried to call me my phone would not ring but I'd get a was a message from Telstra that I had missed a call, and it would list the name or number depending on if it was in my contacts. If I tried calling, I would get one ring and then nothing, If I tried sending a message it would fail.

My staff at work were trying to call me, so I tried calling from my mobile to the business land line, which is a NBN landline, and I got through to them. And that is how I ended up contacting my mother who had been trying to call me, I called her NBN landline and got through to her.

However, there was no saving grace for the shops and the pubs EFTPOS facilities, they went down on Friday and did not work again until Saturday. The Pub lost a lot of revenue from the restaurant area, as that is their biggest earner, and had to close early.

Cash is king.
we talked them into it as 'potential medical emergency ' even the mobile phone signal can be erratic ( 3G , 4G and aw gee ) under both Oplus and Telstra

.. but if the fixed wireless , mobile networks and the copper line goes down .. the recently acquired farm ute came with CB radios

I think your approaching it from the outside view not actually having experience in these situations.

It is the same as when cars started to be made keyless car thefts by hot wiring went practically to 0% while house invasions which involve physical theft of keys with the use of violence went up roughly the same % as the previous down.

You are approaching it from a logical and practical point of view, how you or me might see it and go its not worth it. A crack head on meth on a high won't be going home to jump on google and do a scam
Breaks in general have been decreasing for a decade, and only went up slightly last year, but that’s based on the record low from the year before.

Confrontation and victimisation rates have continued to fall, and remain people pre pandemic rates.

So we aren’t really seeing a massive jump in assaults as we move to digital techs, it’s kind of the opposite, so I don’t think worrying about the possibility of assault should be a reason for avoiding digital tech.

I think that your communications provider is telling only half the story. Unless Telstra is keeping a whole copper network open just for your town, you will find that you have copper to node.

A mate worked at Telstra as a techy installing all the new gear, up until a couple of years ago. He told me that all the old copper communication exchanges have been shut down and being removed.

???

not in the street i moved from last year

a relatively small street is averaging 3 burglaries a week ( not counting car break-ins and attempted car thefts )

there are so many cameras on the houses/flats in the street you probably have more privacy at the tables in the casino

oh by the way when they successfully steal a car they use it to ram-raid the local shops ( which are quickly being surrounded by bollards to reduce ram-raiding ) ... and then when get to the other semi-rural property where they even stole the security system AND a 3 tonne safe

there is lies , damn lies and statistics ( at least in the Brisbane/Gold Coast corridor )

There was a period, a few years ago, where a gang of thief's, well known to the police, regularly broke into homes to steel car keys. They only went for high performance models and used them to goad the Police into a long-distance car chase, or to raid shops, and occasionally the car/Ute was never seen again. It got so bad that the state government introduced new laws to allow longer sentencing for minors, and regular police raids on the adult leaders' homes.

Since then, I hide my keys.

druggies , Africans and teenagers ( separate groups ) according to the ( former ) neighbours footage

at the semi-rural property , one group blamed was a bikie gang , , there seem to be different styles/MOs suggesting different groups

but the police take DNA and blood samples .. and still no word ( despite names and fingerprints of 'known persons' )

Sounds like you live in a bad area, but your relatively small sample size is not as important as what is happening across the country in general.

Wanna know what's coming, Komrades?

Proponents of the digital economy are your enemies folks. I'm not sure whether they are just stupid, complicit, or downright evil like the brown shirts in 1930s Germany.

Regardless, they are your enemies and we have them right here in this thread.

so now they will be trying to steal my phone as well

liable to be a big black-market in mobile phones soon
Unless the criminal knows your passcode, then an IPhone is just a worthless shiny slab to them, maybe they can sell a few dollars worth of parts on it, but its a brick unless they have the passcode to unlock it.

I'm right Jack :xyxthumbs ............I have a dull and dirty Samsung ????? ;)

They are trying to steal more than your phone
HAH , they have been trying to steal my other stuff for decades

even my phone number is occasionally used by an African migrant , not to mention the data bases i have disappeared from

even Medicare lost me for 20 years

this movie could become the scary reality ( the absurdism is already here )

they have been bypassing Apple lock-ins/lock-out for over a decade , even the good-guys do that to help the customers who stuff-up

but then my iPhone is insured broken both front , back and internally , and i resist storing any data on it except some prescriptions '( of very dangerous .. but non-addiction drugs )

... and of course various police and intelligence agencies are on a first name basis with the folks at Apple ( your privacy is just as secure as on Face-Book )

Apple can only help you unlock your phone if you use your Apple ID pass word, without that not even Apple can unlock the phone, Police requests are rejected also.

@divs4ever So lightning does strike in the same place twice.
Had 2 giant marris shattered near to the sheds on different occasions but only feet apart.
Frightened the be-Jesus out of me each time.
well the farm ( house ) is near the top of a mountain range , an the power pole doesn't get all the strikes ( the big trees nearby get their share )

it's a trade -off

lightning strikes are common , but flood events are rare , the last big one in the valley below was 60/70 years back i am told ( by a local )

sure the nearest city gets the water and ( often wind ) damage but that more than 30 km away
