PS CHOPS, "Does anyone else find it hilariously ironic that THEORIES of economics were developed by an empiricist? " mmm nope lol. to be honest my eyebrows just got tied in a knot trying to work it out lol. I dont really understand - it's gone over my head mate lol. Is an empiricist the same as a monarchist ? Sorry m8 - rule 1 line 1 - never take the piss out of someone's nicname or their motto ;) But what the hek - it's happy hour lol. (empirically speaking, I find that my mischievous side goes into overdrive on the matter of stirring during happy hour ;))
Lol!

No, an empiricist is not the same as a monarchist, although most of them were British. In general, they were opposed to the rationialists like Descartes and Leibniz.

But they basically rejected everything that could not be observed. Rejecting Descartes' system and immaterial substance etc.

However, Adam Smith, the founder of modern economics/ capitalism was a die hard empiricist. Yet, his "invisible hand of the market" is somewhat hilarious, given the philosophy he subscribed to. The market is only an idea, not something that follows rules or formulas. If it was purely empirical, we wouldn't be here guessing about what everything will do. Hence, the humour.

Lol!

Look at some of the bubbles. It can be as illogical as fashion. (Although I have had arguments with someone that fashion has some kind of logic, lost that argument. But successfully argued with said person that cheerleading is not a valid sport.)

But I think you pretty much get the picture.

I think it comes back to Knobby's comments... people chose their politicians like a footy team, They wear the colours, scarves etc, fly the flag, and support them no matter what.

We gotta get past that if we want good government (fat chance) :2twocents

I think by the above comments you are doing the voting public a considerable disservice.

I think my own attitude is fairly typical of many voters, in that I am not entirely happy with the present government, despising some of their decisions and admiring and agreeing with others.

I voted Liberal at the last election. If an election were to be held tomorrow I would vote Liberal again. Why? Not necessarily because I am convinced they are all good people who have my best interests at heart, but rather because I trust the Opposition even less and believe they are even less competent.

The new "dream team" (god, how stupid is that as a label) has done nothing to change this view.

On the whole, of course it does..... and totally understand your feelings about labour, but I would support Ghengis Khan if it meant seeing Johnny Rotten out. Sorry if that offends but I truly believe the sociological impact of this government has been to Americanize this country (again speaking sociologically).

Been there, done that, and there is a reason I choose not to live there any more.

But the reason I am going to stick to my comments is this: There are swinging, thinking voters such as yourself. Whatever side they choose is fine, so long as some thought and research has been put into it. But this is the minority.

I particularly like questioning peoples political convictions, using my own simplified version of the Socratic Method. This reveals most people have no "logical" reason for supporting one or another party apart from family tradition, or some outmoded notions of left and right.

When questioned as to the various parties basic platform, most have no idea, defaulting back to cliche'd soundbites for justification.

No clearer evidence of this is the prevailing electioneering tactics of the main parties. Long on teamsmanship, short on policy.

It is a rare delight to find someone who thinks about these things.

Cheers

whattya mean "cliches" wayne?
"It's TIME!" - what other reason could you have lol.
But you're right - I have a theory that everyone would have more inner peace if they could say that - at least once in their life - they voted for some party other that what their parents did. I'm guessing that you could say it's called cutting the hum-drum-bilical chord:2twocents

Yes, I totally agree. All you have to look at is the track record of the Liberal Party and you can just see competence shining through. So I have compiled a list of recent Liberal Party politicians who I feel have been amongst the best Australia has ever had.

Bronwyn Bishop: Doesn't mind a kerosene bath every now and then!

Jacky Kelly: I'm not sure she could read what I am writing here anyway.

Michael Wooldridge: Got a $500,000 a year a job 3 weeks after he left parliament, which just happened to be a political appointment. (illegal)

Peter Reith: Remember the Telstra card affair? Followed by that stock footage of him on that brick of a mobile phone? Not to mention blowing the defence budget by about $10 billion dollars. Oh yeah, and his role in the truth overboard affair.

Amanda Vanstone/ Phil Ruddock: Like to deport Australian citizens. Oh, and they can't confirm just how many people it has happened to, but do confirm it is definitely more than one.

Alexander Downer: "The things that batter!" Referring to our neighbours as, "Busted Ars* Contries": http://www.abc.net.au/pm/stories/s316101.htm And not to mention leaving top secret documents at a conference table for journalists to grab.

Yep, competence is definitely the word that comes to mind when I think of the Howard reign and these superstars. I mean sure, these are all very good reasons to vote for the Liberal Party, but what outstanding measure would it take for the Liberal Party to perform before you would not vote for them, Julia?

I just wish John Hewson was still around so he could run for the Labor Party leadership!

Constable, ahh lol - the $5.99 Four-litre cask at Dan Murphys lol.
I buy the same in "Crisp Dry White" and also "Fresh Dry White" and/or "Flat Wet White" and/or "Stale Half-Dry White" etc ( (btw I can't tell one from the other lol)
...
AND add water ;) - make em last a bit longer lol.

As I posted somewhere else, I'll continue to add water EVEN AFTER they start recycling sewerage water .!! (next week?)

NO-ONE , but NO-ONE is going to take the piss out of MY drinking habits!!

Chops - your problem (with your high "thingo-istic" ideals) is going to be to find a better alternative ;)

Here's a quote from Whitlams days :-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gough_Whitlam
In its second term, the Whitlam Government continued with its legislative reform program, but became embroiled in a series of controversies and scandals, including secret attempts to borrow large amounts of money from Middle Eastern governments, by-passing the Treasury and correct constitutional procedures (the "Loans Affair"). Whitlam was forced to dismiss Treasurer Jim Cairns and another senior minister, Rex Connor, for misleading Parliament.
I mean there are scandals and there are scandals !!
My best mate in those days would have marched into hell for a Labour cause prior to then ... but lol - hasn't voted Labour ever since ;)

PS nonetheless - let's sit back for a few months and enjoy the arguments between Julia Gillard and Peter Costello ;) - gr8 entertainment to be sure. Two masters of the cut and thrust of politics imho ;)

The Liberals have had scandals though. It's just that no one seems to care. General apathy runs the day.

In terms of the Labor Party, they feel like there is nothing else they can do. At points, the Liberal Party could not have stuffed up worse, and no one cares. It's almost as if Howard can just lie, lie all he wants, get away with it, and simply, not have it effect him in the slightest. No one cares, that is the problem IMO.

There are reems and reems of scandals that would have normal governments out on their ear on there own. Maybe that has been the strategy, scandal de-sensitisation.

Chops - lol - we agree on one thing
Cheerleadering is not a legitimate sport.
It is not even an illegitimate sport ;)
It seems to be an insult to women (imho) - but they don't seem to know it !!
crazy.
(no wonder it only works in Aus for professional teams like NRL etc - I mean "bums and t1ts, put bums on seats" I spose. :2twocents
(doesn't even rhyme - make that 1c lol)

LOL - I mean the corollory would be that a squad of men (3 ranks x 4 files orwhatever) get up and throw a few pelvic thrusts when the girls run out to play netball ;)

Hi Wayne,

You have made some good comments. I would like to know what taxes would RISE under a Labor government.

Kevin Rudd is better for the Labor party though.
