Australian Politics General...

On Tuesday last week, the Prime Minister gave the 2023 Lowry lecture.
For those interested in listening to it, it can be found Here.
In it he praised the big 5 prime Ministers, John Curtin, Gough Whitlam, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and Kevin Rudd as
“anchoring of Australia’s strategic policy in our region”. As a result, “through the 80s and 90s, a period of profound change around the world, Australia established the enduring geopolitical architecture of the region”.
I guess it is no great surprise that no non labour prime Ministers were mentioned, but I was more than a little surprised that Julia Gillard, the First Female Prime Minister, of any political bent, did not rate a mention.
I'm sure his speech writer meant no ill will towards her, but it would have been noticed within the other gender set.
Mick

I guess he only mentioned Labor PM's as the Coalition tended to be more US / European centric and often antagonized Asia scoring political points at home Morrison talking tough on China comes to mind.

Or you could say that there are many ex Australian politicians, that are very aligned with China.
Won't mention names but it is obvious, very light google searches help, you don't have to delve too deep. ;)

Aussie Patriot Boycotts Woolworths and Heads to German-Owned Supermarket to Buy Chinese-Made Flags to Celebrate Britain’s Arrival in New Holland

True-blue Aussie patriot Trevor Simpson says he is disgusted at Woolworths’ decision to de-range Australia Day merchandise, confirming he’ll now buy his cheap imported Chinese-made plastic genuine Australian flag at a German-owned supermarket store instead.

“Frankly it’s unAustralian,” Simpson said, furiously throwing a fridge-full of Woolworth’s food in the bin in protest. “When I celebrate Australia’s sacred day it’s my goddam right to do it while holding a piece of cheap merchandise made in a soulless factory in Shenzhen, distributed via a global system of shipping networks and sold to me by the Fresh Food People”.

He said he supported Peter Dutton’s push to boycott the supermarket chain. “Australia has become a bunch of woke lefty Communists. If a Government can’t dictate what a privately-owned supermarket sells in its stores, then I don’t know what this country stands for anymore”.

Of course there is nothing in Woolworths made in a soulless factory in Shenzhen.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Following the untimely death of Peta Murphy, a by election for the fed seat of Dunkley will be held.
In keeping with long standing political in breeding. Labour selected afemale candidate to keep the gender numbers up.
The Liberals, also keeping up with long standing political inbreeding, had two candidates who were piolitcal staffers.
But going against long standing political in breeding, both of these candidates were women.
However, they rescued the long standing political inbreeding by eventually selecting a male to run for them over the two females.
Nathan Conroy, the Mayor of Frankston , fresh from becoming the first ever person to win three consecutive terms as mayor, seems to haver had his bio written by the same person that writes Albo's
“Coming from a background of humble beginnings, having been born into social housing and raised by a mother who worked tirelessly to create opportunities for our family, I understand firsthand the importance of policies that support all Australians,” he wrote in an accompanying statement to Liberal preselectors.
With a margin of around 6%, its going to take a big swing against labour for to lose the seat to Mayor nathan.

Meanwhile, the Liberal party have also had mixed results in their jockeying for position of the nominations for Josh Frydenburgs old seat won by Monique Ryan.
One of the leading contenders is a woman, which does not fit liberal patterns.
However, Amelia Hamer, has the family nepotism going for her in that she is a grand niece of former Victorian premia, Dick Hamer, and grand daughter of former Victorian Senator David hamer. She is also Oxford Educated, worked in Finance in london and San Francisco, so should be just perfect in keeping wealthy Liberal supporters in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
Meanwhile, over in Goldstein, Tim Wilson, the two term liberal member turfed out by Zoe Daniel, is up against two formidable ladies in his attempt at getting pre selection back for the next election. One is a lawyer (surprise surprise), the other is a researher at right wing think tank IPA.
One might expect Liberals to stick with the man they know, further cruelling Duttons attempt to get more liberal women into parliament.
Interestingly, in both of these seats the incumbent loist the seat on preferences despite gaining the most first primary votes.

Ryan won Kooyong on preferences with a 2.9 per cent two-candidate-preferred margin in 2022, after Frydenberg suffered a 6.5 per cent fall in his primary vote, which was 42.7 per cent, compared with Ryan’s 40.3 per cent. Zoe Daniel won Goldstein by the same 2.9 per cent margin, following a 12.3 per cent swing against Wilson’s primary vote, 40.4 per cent compared with Ms Daniel’s 34.5 per cent.

Thus endeth todays report.

Dutton is about as electable as Bill was and we know how that went. Lol
Question is, who in the Liberal party is electable? I can see a couple down the ranks for the future, but as for now, as the egregious Albanese self destructs, who can win?

Could Dutton win in a default? Who dafuq knows?

I think the only electable one was Frydenberg, but with the Middle East issue, he would be a disaster also.
I don't follow either party closely, only the overall issues that are playing out, but other than Albanese there doesn't seem to be a lot of talent in either side. Just my opinion.
So if anyone will win by default, IMO it will be Albo, unless someone else makes their presence felt, fairly soon. :2twocents

This is an oxymoron even when uttered 10,000 words apart.

Surely you jest?

EtA: Notwithstanding the complete dearth of talent on the other side
Realistically who on either side other than the incumbent could be regarded as a serious candidate for PM?

Jim Chalmers would be the only real alternative across both parties.

Labor has very little but the Coalition has even less. :2twocents

Butler and Clare could be contenders for Labor, a fair way down the track, but I can't really see anyone on the Liberal side sensible enough to be an alternative.

During the last election when Albanese had COVID Labors polling went up I think Butler and Clare both were out and about, Chambers is also more than capable all are moderates and avoid ideology positions that just doesn't exist in the current opposition.

Albanese isn't charismatic which is a good thing IMHO works against him polling wise but runs a tight ship so far steady and reliable has to be the 1st government in a very long time that hasn't had a controversy day after day.

Still has moved a significant common sense policy agenda through parliament benefiting lower / middle paid Australians not just doing press photo opportunities and handing out pamphlets.

Thanks for the lovely post Mrs Albanese. Anthony sends his love and says he will home for dinner. :roflmao:
