IMO it is great that the Government isn't listening to ghosts and are making their own decisions on current issues, let's be honest we have to be dependent on someone.
The country is way too big and underpopulated, to be able to defend and or produce enough military equipment to put up enough resistance, without the aid of a major power.
It is just a question of which major power, we would prefer to align ourselves with. IMO

Both Keating and Turnbull have argued AUKUS will make Australia too dependent on the United States at a time the nation should be becoming more self-reliant.
