APEC Sydney 2007

Following is some important information released on Friday by the New South Wales Government and Police on arrangements that will apply to Sydney between September 2 and September 10 which is the period of the APEC meeting in Sydney.

Airport Departures

Special slots have been arranged for arriving and departing dignitaries and rehearsals held in order to minimise any delay. There will, however, be the possibility of delays in road traffic to and from the airport as follows:

· Late afternoon or evening of Tuesday, September 4 which is the scheduled arrival time for the US President and Secretary of State with resultant motorcades.

· The evening of Thursday, September 6 and the morning of Friday, September 7 when other visiting leaders are expected to arrive and which will also mean resultant motorcades.

· The late afternoon/evening of Saturday, September 8 when it is anticipated the US delegation will depart.

· From 3.30pm onwards on Sunday, September 9 when it is expected that all dignitaries will depart Australia with resultant motorcades from the Sydney CBD to the airport precinct.

It is recommended by the Government and the Police that departing and arriving passengers wherever possible use public transport (preferably train) to and from the airport.

It is further recommended that if departing passengers opt to use road transportation to the airport at the above times that they consider allowing an additional hour for travel time and departure formalities.

CBD Arrangements

There are extensive arrangements relating to the City of Sydney CBD and vehicle and people movement over the period of APEC.

These arrangements include:

· Changes to laws to allow Police to search persons and vehicles entering into the downtown harbour area exclusion zone.

· An exclusion zone for part of the period during the conference which includes the downtown / Circular Quay / Opera House / Botanical Gardens area and possibly an area surrounding the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

· Freeway/clearway conditions on certain streets and roads which will ban on road parking and will require through traffic to use alternate methods of transiting the city.

· The closure of Circular Quay, Museum and St James railway stations from Friday, 7 September to Sunday, 9 September (re-opening Monday, 10 September).

· Intermittent closure of the Cahill Expressway.

· The following roads will be closed from 8.00pm on Tuesday, 4 September to 6.00am on Friday, 7 September to all but authorised vehicles:


a) Bridge Street between Macquarie Street and Pitt Street
b) Macquarie Street north of Bent Street
c) Phillip Street north of Phillip Lane
d) Albert Street between Phillip Street and Macquarie Street
e) Young Street south of the AMP Centre
f) Loftus Street between the Department of Education building and Reiby Place
g) Conservatorium Road between the Cahill Expressway off ramp and Macquarie Street.

· In addition, it is understood that the Cahill Expressway off ramp adjacent to the Conservatorium of Music will be closed for the duration of APEC week.

· From 6.00am Friday, 7 September until 11.00pm Sunday, 9 September the following roads in addition will be closed to all but authorised vehicles:

a) Bridge Street between Pitt Street and George Street
b) Phillip Street between Phillip Lane and Bent Street
c) Pitt Street between Reiby Place and Abercrombie Lane

Must admit I've been thinking the market will probably do a bit a dive - but - Dow up overnight , and who nose ? (as usual)

You'd think they won't announce anything negative - such is the spin-doctoring and orchestration that goes into these events.

Certainly, I think people who cause mayhem are asking to be treated bludy roughly - it was one thing back in the days pre 9/11, but how easy for serious trouble makers to hide in their midst , and/or piggy back on their alleged complaints with the leaders of the world.

(Not that I'm not critical of some leaders of the world, I just think that smashing down barricades is less effective than arguing the points out in reasonable chatrooms etc )

PS anyone in Perth want to do a house-swap for a week ?

I just heard over the news that the APEC is costing us $330m. Where does that money go to? The heads of states' entourage? The fireworks wherein the sydneysiders are not invited to? The 3 mile wall?

Wouldn’t it be better to build convention centre somewhere on one of the beautiful small islands of ours, or our neighbours?
Make set up, like one of the refugee processing centres, maybe few stars more.

Make all by invitation only, surround it by the Royal Navy vessels and do it there every time.

Probably too simple, and would not show all the Government's might and would not allow to identify some protesters for further investigation or some other important reason.

Heard that acronym can also stand for : All Possible Expenses Covered

Ohh that means we all have a tax payer funded tour of the strip clubs to look forward to paying for

The Hooters tour bus leaves from Pitt Street @ 10:00pm and the Scores tour bus leaves from George Street @ 12:00am

how was traffic up there this morning?

..traffic was probably the best its been in a few months, clear run into the city. A lot of companies are advocating working from home/take public transport if coming into the city.Leaves the roads nice and clear for us drivers!

whether the figure is bigger or smaller, it all comes out of the taxpayers' pocket. so, as a taxpayer, don't we get a say in all this big spending? what say democracy?

It seems the people they represent don't like Illegal Wars and Police States...

i ran the APEC gauntlet of police today when i saw a client in the building next to where dubya is staying. rows of cops in body armour lining the street funnelling pedestrians through a narrow corridor, was quite impressive but i couldn't help but feel the crims must be having a field day while all this is going on. they were all very serious too ignoring smiles, comments and dancing shuffles up and down the line. for added effect they should have been holding their batons but alas no joy there.

out on the harbour were black boats with navy seals escorting what looked to be pleasure boats around, black helicopters hovering over the botanic gardens (apparently jamming mobile phone traffic, i was having trouble with my reception) and ADF personnel in field camo. huge g-men are wandering around doing their best agent smith impersonations while waves upon waves of extra cops were converging on the hotel as i walked down macquarie street. i felt paranoid even though i haven't done anything wrong in at least the last 12 hours.

on top of the hotel were 2 spooks, rugged up against the rain standing on top of the roof of the penthouse, while outside there are stacks of crates and a small tent which were were trying to decide was doing there. i still had an excellent shot from the office into the penthouse had i been in possession of one of those missing rocket launchers everyone is paranoid about being on the loose.

also you know the presiential motorcade cars? inside is a chain gun which pops out the top. impressive firepower right there.

its all very interesting, the city streets were really quiet and i reckon i can get away with driving as fast as i want as it seems every single highway patrol car the state possesses is parked in the security zone.

as for the cost, i reckon it is just part and parcel of doing business with world leaders. i much prefer them sitting around a table (and doing the real negotiations in the bar afterward) than sitting in their own ivory towers casting suspicious eyes over each other.
