Computer Problem - Can Anyone Help?

Could be a virus I had a case were I would click on some thing and it would take ages to process.

I've been checking out options for creating a web photo gallery. One called JAlbum (freeware) looks good but it requires Java Runtime which I'd have to install (Win XP).

Grateful if anyone could comment:
- Is Java Runtime a harmless enough download into WinXP?
- Has anyone used JAlbum, does it live up to it's claims? (..No I don't work for JAlbum.)

Web galleries can be created within IrfanView, but it's so complex it does my head in (not difficult). Anyway, thanks in advance should anyone respond.

Java is a staple application on any Windows machine; as long as you obtain it from a safe source (I go to Oracle). Then it's just a matter of setting it to auto-update to make sure you always have the most current version.

PS: Make sure you untick (or leave unticked) any boxes that invite you to have other Open Source stuff added to your machine or search engines or toolbars.

wrt irfan - I've been using it for years, but agree it can take a little "getting used to".

Thanks guys. The Oracle site will be a useful resource. Likewise Picasa looks promising, although I'll need to see if Google require to sole host it - I'd like to be able to ftp it out.
I've got a copy of Java Runtime now and will set it to auto-update as suggested. With unexpected add-ons, toolbars and the like can be difficult to get rid of, so unticking the boxes a good suggestion.

Windows users, has anyone installed EMET - Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit v3.0. A bit alarming that we're being told there's a big vulnerability now, and to use Chrome or Firefox until it's fixed.

Been using Chrome or Safari for years. I'd personally stay away from IE. The only places I see IE is big departments/institutions (large companies, schools etc etc).

Can anyone tell me how I can change photos saved in JPEG to TIFF? The "Scanner and Camera Wizard" software I'm using doesn't give various options of the format in which to save the pictures.
I have tried one of the converters on the net which purported to change JPEG to TIFF and ended up with a blurry lime green page - no photo.

Any help would be much appreciated. Maybe some other way of saving the photos in a smaller format so that if I send them to someone they don't take forever to upload and ditto for the recipient to download.

Are you wanting to compress the photos for emailing?

Yes. Many thanks for your PM. I've just tried it and it works like magic. Terrific.
For anyone else who might be interested, hope sptrawler doesn't mind my sharing his suggestion:

Right mouse button on the photo

Shrink photo
open the new shrunk photo
