Computer Problem - Can Anyone Help?

My computer seems to have developed a mouse problem in the past day or so. When I use the left button it is very slow to respond - double clicking doesn't work at all and I have to hold the button down for one or two seconds for it to work. For example to open a thread on ASF.

I haven't changed any settings and it was working fine before. The mouse pysically seems fine - it's just slow to respond. Right button is working as usual.

I've done a full system scan with Vet anti-virus (paid up subscription with automatic updates) and it found nothing. Also ran Spybot and Ad-Aware and they found a few minor things that have been fixed.

I've tried changing the double click speed setting since the problem developed and it hasn't helped.

What to do now?

If it is a wireless optical mouse, then you will need to change the battries, sounds like they are low.

If it is just a standard optical or ball mouse, then I suggest buying a new one. They are cheap as chips.

If the left mouse button isn't as response as it once was, but the right mouse button is fine I'd suggest it is just warn out. Unless you're left handed, you'll use the left button a whole lot more than the right so its typical for it to wear out first.

Thanks for the responses.

It seems to be intermittent as it came right and then went bad again and now it's OK again. So I think you're right about the mouse just wearing out. It's an ordinary mouse with a cord so not the batteries.

I tried the old technical trick of yelling at it and making a few threats and that seemed to work so maybe the mouse is just being a bit cheeky and needs a few words every now and then. Might have to sit the cat next to the computer to give the mouse a hint about behaviour. :

I'll get a new mouse and see what happens.

Seriously, I had exactly the same problem for a couple of days last week.
At the same time, using the mouse as usual didn't move the cursor in the usual way - it went all over the screen, in no way following my directions.
I resorted to the usual highly technical solution of much cursing, then picking up the mouse and banging it fairly hard onthe desk several times. This apparently effected a cure! no, I have no idea why.

It is now behaving perfectly and no cheese required, though I did ask the dog for her opinion.

Hi Smurf,

..... sometimes, even optical mice can get "dirty feet", with
a build-up of dirt underneath, particularly in a dusty
environment.

Just scrape any excess dust off the 4 small "feet" of your
mouse and it will feel much better .....

Hi,

When I go to play a CD or DVD in the player I get a "SMI Panel error".

error signature: appname - panel.exe appver - 1.2.0.0 modname - user32.dll

Not getting anything on Google.

Anyone help me fix this?

Does it look like this example? If so I suggest a better breed of rodent will fix that right up. Just go buy a new one. $29 at Dick Smith or similar.



Gringotts bank - Google for a new video driver and download. This should fix the problem or perform a system restore to a previous restore point. PM me for details of what system you are using and I will walk you through it.

In the interim, could try re-assign the mouse buttons...ie swap left click to right

sorry cant remember exactly, but pretty sure

i recomend cordless and rechargable batteries


btw, if anyone knows how to restore my missing volume icon, or remove Bing searchbar under Vista would be a legend, have tried lots of fixes

Wow... this thread started 5 years ago! The computer is working nicely at the moment (and let's hope it stays that way...).

I don't have a picture handy, but the mice (real, live ones) are doing just fine. Only trouble is, I need to work out some means of identifying which one is which since they all look pretty much the same apart from a bit of variation in size.

Thanks Skyquake. Have you actually used either of these?
I had a look at the first and attempted to read the lengthy terms and conditions, but am not clear at the end whether there is a charge and if so what it might be.
It says there's "Free", "Basic" etc etc but doesn't make clear what their converting of a single file would constitute.

Am reluctant to click on the go ahead and convert button until I know potential cost.
