Yep Julia - I think Costello had his opportunity and I dont think he will come forward again..
I am not really sure he knows himself what he wants to do - like he has a chip on his shoulder that he was let down

I think good on Rudd for offering him a position if he thinks its for the benefit of the country

I really wish these politicians would work together..

Hi Duckman - thanks.

I refer to the global boom and not a resource boom because of the economic strength almost everywhere in western economies (and in developing economies), not just in predominantly resource-based economies. This created a benign global environment in which to operate and I think it will be remembered as a golden period, like the post WW2 years, for growth. This boom started to develop well before 2001. Added to this was an economy and financial system freed up by well overdue changes made under the previous administration, making the economy so much more adaptable to external stimulus (both positive and, as we have now seen, negative).

I maintain that the circumstances in which Mr. Costello governed were relatively benevolent compared to circumstances before and since (especially since...). Don't get me wrong, there is still a degree of competence required to manage in an overall benign environment, as well as risks. The upside is limited to being seen as doing a competent job, while the downside is somehow managing to stuff things up in the good times, for which he would have been pilloried.

I accept the good work with APRA; Australians have this work to thank as one of the reasons for not ending up in the sort of financial strife now afflicting many other western economies. Another is the strong resource based nature of our economy - thank-you China. And not to forget the floating AUD.

Labor offers Costello job

FORMER treasurer Peter Costello will be offered a Federal Government job - the guardianship of the nation's $60billion future fund he set up during his 11 years as treasurer.

The Government has earmarked Mr Costello for a board position of The Future Fund if our longest serving treasurer's shock decision last week not to recontest his Melbourne seat triggers a by-election.

A senior Labor source has revealed to The Sunday Canberra Times that the Government is keen to see Mr Costello at the helm of Australia's hefty cash reserve, set up in 2006 under the Howard government.

"(But) Peter Costello is of course very free and very welcome to put himself forward for opportunities as they arrive."

Mr Costello had devoted many years of his life to public service and has "a political track record of achievement," she said.

"And that deserves a round of appreciation and applause."

Ms Gillard said she would convey that message to him personally when they meet in Israel this week.

The pair are part of a parliamentary delegation that will hold discussions with Israeli leaders.

I'm sure he'll get plenty of private sector job offers... he did do a pretty good job managing the future fund after all...

While the Canberra press gallery hyperventilates over a used-car dealer called John Grant, the Leader of the Opposition, Malcolm Turnbull, has a more subtle and enduring problem. That problem is called Christopher Pyne.

On February 4, a stormy day in Parliament, the Prime Minister reacted cryptically to yet another interjection from Pyne, who has been elevated by Turnbull to manager of opposition business in the house, sits next to his leader on the front bench, and has more to say than anyone else on the Opposition benches.

Well we'll see. He has made numerous comments that there was more to life than politics - and some would argue that he achieved more success and fame in his short period as a barrister than many legal eagles achieve in a whole career.
Why? Because he didn't jump off the cliff? You would have preferred to have seen the dead body?

Quite the opposite. Since the lost election, Costello regularly features highly in polls taken as preferred leader. Why do you think Rudd and Turnbull are pleased to see the end of him. It was a case of not fully appreciating what you've got until it's gone.

Despite this not making complete sense - what has been the catastrophic result of this? Rudd and Wayne didn't have it to hock off?

He was also Essendon's Number 1 ticket holder - you have to love the guy!!!
