In Melbourne people are beaten up every weekend, some seriously, some even die.

The authorities threaten to close some nightclubs down but never do, they now even say they'll make racial violence attract greater penalties, why I don't know , violence is violence.

What they don't do it go the the root of the problem, alcohol, they do not enforce laws that prevent premises serving drunks. People are allowed to roam the streets in packs drunk and it's not right.

If someone is drunk in a club their solution is to throw them out on the street, where they can take it out on the first person they see.

I believe the real problem of controlling alcohol abuse in public is not being addressed because politicians are too weak and pander to the alcohol industry.

They just leave it to the police and hospitals to clean up the mess.

If they dont serve drunks, where will they get all their revenue from? :D im sure most of it comes from the people that are already drunk...
and what should we do with them once their drunk? place them in prison cells till they sober up? :p::p:

Fine the **** off the licensees, and make public drunkenness an offense.

You cant drive a car over .05 how about not being allowed on the streets over .1 ???

Same problem in Brisbane and most other major cities i believe.

Is alcohol the problem?

I have a few too many drinks some Sat or Fri nights in town and i have never bashed anyone.

Maybe the problem is more to do with how people are brainwashed into thinking it is acceptable to be be a d!ckhead who can't think for themselves and the alcohol brings it out.

Been involved with this issue quite a lot on Hobart (where it's worse than you might expect).

Bottom line is bottle shops, not nightclubs, sell somewhere around 70% of alcohol and most people these days are well and truly drunk before they even go out on the town. If the clubs don't serve drunks then they won't be serving anyone, and they can't remain in business without selling anything.

Club closures didn't work. It just turned a bad situation into an outright disaster. A mess and noise turned into outright violence almost literally overnight once that was done.

So what has helped? An increased police presence has to some extent. So has toughening up of licensing conditions. So has a couple of very high profile incidents. And although it's a somewhat dubious link, anecdotally so has having a state premier young enough to have actually been in most (all?) of the clubs in question. At least he understands the issues.

As for Melbourne, well let's just say that the violence in that city is a key reason I avoid it. Much more fun going to Sydney, Adelaide or anywhere else where bashings aren't a big part of the nightlife. :2twocents

Binge Drinking is a major problem facing our Society I believe. I'm reasonably young ~ 23 and that's all I did when I was younger. Not to the extent of some of my mates, but whenever we'd go out, we'd binge drink, and still do, although now for myself maybe once or twice every 2 months. Most of my friends weren't the type to start fights either. But have witnessed plenty and been in altercations.

People just get a gut full of grog and think their Mohammad Ali.

My sons mate had 3 teeth loosened a couple of weeks ago, my son was bashed by 3 heros a few years ago, it's just rife , the penalties are non existant unless you kill someone and it's about time someone did something about it.

I'm worried every time they leave the house to go out at night.

I myself was smashed in the back of the head, knocked me down and I struck my head on the pavement. Was unconscious for a minute or 2. I count myself lucky, how many incidents do you hear of people being king hit and end up being killed or a potato for life.

That intro song to Underbelly always comes to mind - ' Its a Jungle out there '

shows like Underbelly are part of the cause as to why 'It's a jungle out there'

so you are telling me that all the glorified violence people watch on TV, at the movies, at sports events doesn't desensitize them to violence?

It's got much worse over the years, we follow the USA

We need those in authority to man up and fix it.

If the polititians did their job it needn't be.

rubbish also

what they gunna do about it ?

already CCTV , ID screens , facial recognition software , police links to said software and ID screens .....

ppl still gunna get full of piiis and bad manners and fight whatevers in there path if they that way inclined , always have always will

even nightclub and pub precinct bannings dont work .just a new pair of fists ready to step in there place

i have no remedyother than close the bloody lot but then i,d be out of A bizzness and would kinda be a denial of ones basic rights to go have a beer in public wouldnt it ?

If you punch someone in the head you get thrown in the slammer.

If you serve grog to drunks you get closed down for a week.

Easy, shall I go on ?

The problem is Australian culture. It's seen as cool and funny to get wasted, it's become a weekend hobby to get really drunk and do something stupid or "wild" and be a "larikin". In some asian countries it is seen as weak minded to get totally drunk and drunks are thought of as fools. This is their culture and the way they are brought up. This is what we need to change.
Children also need to have visits from ex cons to there school to give them a talk on the realities of their actions.

gunna tell you a maybe true story now . all identities and situations have been made up to protect the innocent :D

once upon a time in a WA city there was a crowd of 100 or more locals that used to come to the nightclub precint every week JUST to start blues , roll ppl and generally make a nuisance

the local police , nightclub owners done everything they could VIA the laws to stop it .ie bannings , lockouts , lockups , offender lists etc

the trouble still continued just not in the clubs carparks but in the streets as ppl waited for cabs / walked home

one day another bunch of peesed of locals hired a pantech truck , filled it with 40 of the biggest , ugliest bat weilding vigalantes they could find , whose name cannot be mentioned as currently they are frowned upon in the media :D

thos bunch of ruffians drove up and fdown the nighclub area and bashed all known trouble makers ,and made a speedy getaway

they did this every weekend for 3 weeks

was no more trouble except the odd individual numnut playing up for over 6 months in said precinct

this strategy may be frowned upon but boy did it work a treat

oh thats if it really happened and not just the ramblings of some drunken hairy nun

There are a variety of factors that concern street violence and alcohol. Cultures/attitudes/upbringings...all play a part. Unfortunately it is resulting in injuries and even deaths. The current system is not working...surely this government has to get radical in its thinking and just try something new. It is a bit of a double edged sword though...govt makes nice revenues of these businesses...would you really want to shut down these places? Especially in doom and gloom times?

I remember going out one night in Lisbon to the "crazy" part of town (beautiful city...crazy part was just party streets). Anyway, there were seedy characters all round and people looking quite suspicious. Who were they? Undercover cops; on the doors, inside the clubs, loitering on the streets. How I knew this; asked the hostel owner who came out with us. Does it work? Sure does; the majority of people don't know who is who and when something happens, police are always on hand. Also, having police officers on doors at nightclubs is another way to curb the drunks. Just food for thought...
