Any sudden change in load, either up or down, can cause major problems for the grid if it's large enough. While ago there was something similar with switching light off for 1 hour.
People responsible for grid said to media, that sudden drop in demand can be bigger problem for the grid, than sudden increase in demand.
As to purchase of anything we artificially create increased demand the day before and the day after, which is hard on petrol stations and us customers, who will be frustrated by staying in longer queues than usual.
On the other hand if we could all go solar from 22-nd this could be really something, but petrol stations would collapse first, I think.
That event didn't actually achieve much though. Promoters claim a 10% reduction but that wasn't noticeable at the power stations - closer to 1% and too small to accurately measure compared to business as usual.
As for the original post, it would have some impact only if we all stopped consuming petrol for a day and didn't make up for it before or after. That is, shut down the transport system for a day and somehow enforce that all disrupted travel, freight etc is abandoned rather than made up the next day.
Getting about on a flying pig would be more effective. I'm glad that ASF allows free speech though even if the idea doesn't stack up.
