Your Tax Dollars at Work

The equivalent means things like cheaper prescriptions (under $5 when others pay $30+), free school card, bulk GP billing, reduced electricity, phone bills, cheaper public transport - lots of extras!

I get cheaper public transport as a student anyway.

And with bulk billing, you still have to find a doctor that has signed up to that system, and then wait 3 or 4 days for an appointment.

I think you will find that all GP's bulk bill pensioners and card holders. As for having to wait 3 to 4 days - well, doesn't everyone! Sometimes it is well over a week for me. And I have to pay a $10 gap. If you have an illness that requires immediate attention then the GP system is quite useless. Thankfully there is now a clinic nearby open long hours, needs no appointment (but you might wait a couple of hours after arriving) but no choice of Doctor. Which is fine if you are really ill.

Students get all kinds of benefits but once you stop studying, it is welcome to the real world!
