One can waste their entire life trying to better this world, and it'll never work. If everyone were to try to better themselves instead, we'd have no problems.
'the best interests of the group are achieved by the best interests of the person'
I think this was disproved 'if I remember John Nash in "A Beautiful Mind"'
'the best interests of the group are achieved by the best interests of the person in relationship to the group'
remind me to never be in your group Nyden
Ahhh! A social Darwinian.Ah, but that's an argument for ones best interests - my argument about bettering oneself is not so much about interests, but rather ones attitudes, and beliefs about life. Such personal attributes have a great contribution to society as a whole.
Furthermore, in my "group" - one would not care about the best interests of the group, only the interests of themselves. To hell with the group! Just get enough power, and money as to keep you above the hoard throughout your life, and you're set.
I can only hope this is said tongue in cheek. But, sadly, I suspect you are quite serious in your pont of view.Ah, but that's an argument for ones best interests - my argument about bettering oneself is not so much about interests, but rather ones attitudes, and beliefs about life. Did you ever see 'A Beautiful Mind' Nyden?
I have a feeling you would of aimed for the blonde and gone home alone.
You are essentially part of the group, so looking out for yourself and the group are mutual. If you screw the group, you yourself are screwed.
your social theory has a few flaws
As Julia suggested may be the case, the last part of my comment was indeed tongue in cheekSimply because I do care about everyone in society, and I do try to help where I can, but I put myself first.
I guess what I'm trying to say about my social theory - is that one can never depend on anything, or anyone; but themselves. This may sound harsh, possibly even sad, but I honestly believe it to be the truth. I guess I don't trust society anymore than I trust our government. This applies to everything - happiness, money, security, etc.
If we're all just ants working away in our little city, how does one ever get ahead of the pack? By doing something different, and putting themselves first.
Yes, I saw the movie - quite honestly their best bet would have been to simply walk away from that entire situation, and avoid the embarrassment.
Reading this thread, I'm reminded of "Animal Farm".
Anyone else see the relevance?

WILDCAT strikes against foreign workers have spread through oil refineries and other energy facilities in Britain, fuelled by fears of rising job cuts due to the global slowdown.
The protest started at Britain's third-largest oil refinery, Lindsey in Lincolnshire, eastern England, where workers first walked out on Wednesday over the use of Italian and Portuguese contractors on a STG200-million ($440 million) building project.
But it had spread by Friday to a handful of other refineries and plants across Britain, where unemployment is at its highest rate for 10 years as the credit crunch hits hard.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has in the past pledged "British jobs for British workers'', while recently warning against trade protectionism as a response to the worldwide downturn.
Local lawmaker Shona McIsaac, of Brown's ruling Labour Party, said the decision to hire foreign contractors was "like a red rag to a bull for people in our community who are out of work''.
The swarms of Unemployed Brits might start dragging all those pesky antipodean barmen out into the streets and throw them onto the next big red bird ouuta there soon hey ?
I guess down here all we do is revoke working visas, but these European passport holders can float around from country to countrty like gypsies pinching each others jobs - perhaps bidding wages into the ground and demonstrating how Globilisation is doomed to failure
This new world order thing is starting to look more like a new world failure ....
Lots of revolting people here at asf. Robots Beej come to mind. Make me puke with their endless spruik.
