When to buy a new car?

I'm looking at buying a new car, sorry if this is slightly OT.
They are offering mad deals now and all seem desperate, but the cars are 2008 plate.
I'm thinking that in about 2-3 months when the 2009 build cars come through the dealers may be in more pain so might get similar deals or better but one build year old less for resale value.
Anyone got any thoughts?
 
The deals are pretty good at the moment, i bought a new Mazda 2 for the trouble and strife, came fully optioned with rego and all on road costs, same car 12 months ago at the same dealer was $3K more and i don't think that included the rego.

Its a 2008 build but as far as im concerned its a January 2009, when it comes to selling trading in it hardly makes any difference.

they say December/January is the best time to buy, the 2009 build wont come through until late March.
 
Which car are you interested in ? Depends on a lot of factors. If the shape of this car is changing this year, then better wait for the new car. If it is the same design from last years than it does not matter a lot.

Resale again depends on the car company and model.
 
Don't buy a car at all, unless it's built in Australia. If it's imported don't touch it.
These are hard times. Are you an Aussie? Not if you buy foreign.
Why not work abroad for a while, come back, and buy a car from the proceeds - that's really helpful.
 

Very true.
I keep our Company cars for 4 yrs.
Times nearly up so I go the the Govt Auctions.
Cant wait this year as not only will interest rates be really low for leases but no dealers will want them.
We run Holden/Falcon Utes and Sedans.
Will be very interested in Truck Auctions as well!

If interested price guides here for SA all sorts of Vehicals.
I have a pro agent buy for me charges $300 a vehical.

You'll get no thanks for that, just buy what you want to.
Most of what you have in your house comes from China anyway, nice sentiment but If I can afford a Porsche, Merc or Nissan GTR you wont find me giving that up for the fat cats at Ford or Holden.
Jobs ??? unless all Australians immediately run out and but a Holden or Ford jobs will go anyway.

The government auctions are great and you can get some great deals on cars under 2 years old, but the vehicles are all basically the commodore/Falcon/Camry plus the ute and dual cabs.

I get a Camry every 12 to 18 months and usually sell it privately around what i paid for it then go and get another from the Auctions, watch the auction and have 3 or 4 your happy with, like any market if you watch for a while you get a good idea of what they sell for and most buyers are dealers so your paying what they pay, although i think they pay only $100 buyers fee against the public's $250, just go an extra $100 and its usually yours, although ive seen a few people go silly and a car ends up a thousand or more than others when you get 2 or 3 bidders after the same car (usually colour related)

Everyone in your local supermarket.

Banks who use off shore call centers.

Telstra - same thing.

As far as I know anyone can bid at these auctiions, you may have to register first.
You will be bidding against retailers and wholesalers, so if you win you'll be getting a good deal, just have to be sure the car is ok, no guarantees, so take a mechanic with you if possible and check the car out in advance of the auction.

They get plenty of my taxes and what do they do ? blow it on bailouts.

Try going to KMart and finding something made in Australia, besides the checkout girl.

Run a few ads in the paper you might get on the 6 o'clock news

3 of our last 4 cars have been at these auctions. All good cars, and were prestige models. We often saved $5k+, but I haven't been to one for a couple of years. They would be even better value now I would imagine.
