As seen by the rampant rise in the shareprice of INP today I thought it would be a good time to start a thread about the future winners in the oil sector.

After the recent run for companies such as

AED
CVN
CVI
INP

Some others worth keeping an eye on maybe

CIG
FAR
PCL
NWE

Anybody got any thoughts on the oil sector?

There are 2 kinds of oil companies. The first is one which has oil and is priced accordingly. The second is looking and hopes to find some and is also priced accordingly.
If the first type doesn't find more oil it will fade out, eventually worthless. The second is speculative. If it finds oil it will use the profits looking for more and will probably end up worthless as well. Is it a good time to be in oil ? It is a lottery. I have a few oil stocks but think of them as speculative.

i really dont know too much about oil, ie how and where it is found etc.

one fairly young spec oiler that has potential to take off IF it ever hits anything is AKK.

well the best part of the oil exploraton sector is the trading potential before exploration results.

Most of the time you can make substantial profits trading stocks before the results are released and it is irelevent whether the company actually finds oil (great example EGO,EMR)

Granted the ones like AED,INP that actually strike black gold can make you enough money to retire, it is often better to get in early before the run up to the exploration results and decide whether to take the profit before the results of stick it out and decide to see what happens.

Hey Mick,

If you liked the INP result today you may want to have a gander @ another Qld based explorer due to punch down a hole this month with a similar recoverable target.

Prawn- after the farce in PEL 73 I wouldn't go near Austin myself (despite the compelling descending triangle from the fall from $1.00 to present).

I personally have been watching GRL / EXR since the merger announcement for opportunities as they have an interesting mix with attractive upside.

However my favourite by far is OEL:)

Energy Stocks you might like to consider:

PYM - 42c.

Price moved up a little lately.

Ann. expected very soon.

CTP - 21c

I would of thought that a better time to be in oil was 2 years ago at the start of the run up.:D

I am a fan of DLS at the moment:

Drilling with Exxon Mobil with 1.5 weeks estimated till final depth potential upside is large with a 35% stake, just started to run initially on Friday from .16 to .20 and in a trading halt today, will be back on Tuesday... see DLS thread
