Victorian treasurer Tim Pallas has confirmed he will quit politics.

Speaking to reporters outside his office at 1 Treasury Place, he has just said:
Can I say that after 25 years in senior positions, either as chief of staff to the premier Steve Bracks … 14 years as treasurer and 18 years serving the people of Werribee, this has been the great honour and privilege of my life.

His departure will trigger a byelection in his seat of Werribee, which he currently holds by a 9.2% margin, though the Liberals are planning to target it.

Will be 19 years in politics, a long time.

I have two big criticisms:
1. Health. After Covid the costs didn't reduce back to normal.
I know he is not responsible directly for health but as treasurer, pressure should have been brought to bare.

2. The Commonwealth Games debacle. Sure he came in later and helped stop it but he needed to risk the enmity of fellow ministers and act more like an ogre. I know it was Jacinta's baby (and I don't understand how she recovered from this and made Premier) but he needed to be a lot nastier.

Anyway good luck to him. I would give him 5/10. Earlier he was OK but he doesn't really have any answers now.
 
Interesting, the Federal Labor government got rid of the ABCC and the Victorian State Labor government are creating their own watered-down version.

The Victorian government will move to strengthen labour hire laws and establish a complaints advisory body to stamp out criminal and unlawful conduct in the state’s construction sector.​

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said she wanted the changes to come into effect “as soon as possible” to stamp out the “rotten culture” and provide a stronger framework to support workers on construction sites. ​

The government has also supported in principle the recommendation to establish an alliance involving state and federal law enforcement and regulators to address allegations of criminal and unlawful conduct on Victorian construction sites.​

Way too many seat polishers and bludgers in politics.
That's how Victoria has gotten into the situation it has, too many scared members afraid to call out Chairman Dan and too many politicians just wanting to slide under the radar and pull a pay cheque.
The problem is, as the economic situation continues it's downward trajectory, people will become more and more frustrated with the inaction and BS political excuses.
Interesting times coming, that's for sure, fortunately the power grid will bring it all to a head sooner, rather than later IMO

Politicians don't fight fires, they more than likely know nothing about bush fires, let alone how to fight them.
The last thing the CFA volunteers need is some bloody politician poking their nose in.

They say the other group has close to the numbers to depose their most successful opposition leader in 30 years but are fighting among themselves between Brad Batten, pretty awful performer and the supposedly better Jess Wilson. I've been in parliament less than a year but I have media skills or Sam Groth, I am a natural leader of the party because I played tennis and have also just got into parliament. Hopeless.

And Sky News still have Pesutto in their sites. A true fremeny who helped Labor win their last election by a record due to their actions. Now the Libs have a winner, let's destroy him.

James Newbury (famous for just getting in on the safe seat of Brighton against an 18 year old) after promising to shut down the secret women's refuge for women that have been bashed because "We don't want that sort of place in Brighton") is very upset that Pesutto will allow voting from members who are away for Christmas. Everyone knows that if they have a meeting they will have a spill and he is scared he hasn't got the numbers.

From the Age:

A source close to Pesutto, speaking anonymously to detail internal party matters, said it was “gutless” that the rebel group has not been upfront about the purpose of Friday’s meeting.

“The real purpose is to spill the leadership, but they don’t have the guts to say it.

“In what world can’t things like boards of companies not allow members to participate virtually? It’s a pretty archaic expectation that everyone physically needs to be in the room.”
 
Truly surprised at the lack of comment of the recent events in Victorian politics, re Pesutto/Deeming/Battin.

I can't be sure, because after correctly identifying him as a closet Marxist)Postmodernist, I'm on ignore, but I imagine the Knob is crying in his pretzels.

Disclaimer: don't know much about this Battin chap, we don't get much comment about him over here in the cultural backwater.

It's Brad Batten now the opposition leader. An ex cop.
If he gets in and Peter Dutton is the leader it might be an advantage to Victoria.

Some reporter asked him why there weren't any women in the shadow front bench. Why is it an all male team?

His answer:

"Today I fought to bring a woman back into the party room and I will continue to make sure that females and women are heard in the party room."

Hopefully, he won't become another awful pick and a loser. Hopefully he realises that the previous guy gave him a winning lead and all he has to do is nothing stupid.
