In the context of this forum I'm seeing it as more about keeping to the forum's primary purpose. So should we stop voting altogether as voting for one side or another only encourages the winners to believe that they have the support
of the people on 32% of the primary vote?
Just because someone posts something in an on-topic (economics, trading, business etc) thread that happens to align with the views of a politician shouldn't end up derailing the thread into a political commentary.
My underlying thought here isn't censorship. It's just about the viability of this forum in the long run, it being attractive to new members and so on. Political comment per se doesn't bother me, but I do think partisan politics ought be kept firmly out of financial, trading, investment etc threads unless it's directly relevant to the subject.
Directly relevant = eg a mining company needs government approval to develop the mine and due to controversy it's not clear approval will be granted, that's very much on topic to that company. A generic rant about Labor, Liberal, Greens or whoever without a specific issue and context isn't, that's just politics.
As I say, I'm just thinking in terms of improving the forum here. Personally I'm pretty hard to offend but that's not the point.
I'll liken it to music. I couldn't care less what the artist's political views are and I'll still listen to their music even if I disagree with their world view. I draw the line however if they start preaching it at a concert - I came to hear them sing, play guitar or whatever not to be given a political lecture. Only real exception being if the band's overtly political as a core part of its act (eg Midnight Oil for a well known example) in which case it's reasonably expected they might do that.
The ASF equivalent of that is not expecting to find a political rant in a stock thread unless it's directly relevant to the company.
Just my
