Just watched Project NIM on SBS on Demand

Nim was a chimp that was raised from birth by people as basically a proto human. The intention was to see if chimps could learn language. In NIM'c case they used sign language.

The story of Nim's life , the people he affected, the impact he had on them is compelling. Well worth checking out.

Just watched the movie Moneyball based on a true story. Everyone who buys and sell shares should watch this movie about trading players in baseball.

It's as good as I was told it was. Which is bluddy good.

On Netflix.

"Lancaster" on Stan.

Documentary on the Lancaster aircraft used by Bomber Command in WW2.

Worth a watch if you're interested in this sort of thing. Talks about the development of the aircraft, and many of the missions it was used on. Restored footage, interviews with surviving flight crew and footage of one of two restored Lancasters still flying in action.

I never knew that the Lancaster was based on the Manchester bomber, but with the Manchesters' troublesome twin engines replaced with four of the Merlin engines being used in the Spitfire.

Just came across this series on ABC on Agatha Christie.
I hadn't really thought much about her and her life. Just understood she was a great detective story teller.
This investigation into her life is intriguing. One appreciates how the various challenges she faced created the impetus and steel for her writing.

I finished watching the Australian version of Alone on SBS last week. The organizers dropped 10 people into the freezing, miserable world of Tasmanian wilderness in winter.

I normally despise reality programs. But this was truly different IMV. Far more openhearted in its approach. Some absolutely fascinating people with quite different approaches to surviving the challenges of Tasmanian wilderness in the winter.

Well worth a watch. For what its worth Alone Australia was the the most watched program on SBS ever. Got a lot of people sucked in. Probably a good show not to binge on.

Watch Rabbit-Proof Fence streaming now on SBS On Demand.

I was looking for something different... Too many crime/comedy/drama/medleys . So I thought
Exotic bird mating dances. Or "Dancing with Birds"

Long story short. Amazing footage of how a series of exotic male birds strut their stuff to get a female to give them a very quick, quicky.

Wacky narration by Stephen Fry. Excellent editing and bird dancing talent you may never have seen before. Quite delightful.

Saw Emily the Criminal on Netflix earlier this year.
Just brilliant. Not often one finds oneself rooting for the scammer.

This review does the movie justice. Well worth checking out.

Just found and have half finished The Orchestra on SBS.
Absolutely xxxing brilliant. If you are fed up to the back teeth with politically correct , gender sensitive blah, blah, blah this is for you.
Whip sharp. Great story telling.

Don't peak. Just watch it unfold. Far more fun.

PS Carmens Curlers is also a great series. Based on a true story and well worth checking out.

Watched the latest instalment of the Mission Impossible movies yesterday, very entertaining, the antics in a Fiat 500 E.V were hilarious.

I saw Barbie yesterday... I thought it was very good. Quite subversive in its depiction of contemporary female gender roles and the role Barbie dolls played.

There was a very striking monologue delivered by a character in the movie that summed up the writers views on the situation of women. Didn't happen simply or easily. It has certainly resonated with many people I know.

What does America Ferrera say in her full 'Barbie' monologue?

"It is literally impossible to be a woman," Gloria tells Barbie. "You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.

"You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can’t ask for money because that’s crass. You have to be a boss, but you can’t be mean. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas. You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman, but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men’s bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you’re accused of complaining.

"You’re supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you’re supposed to be a part of the sisterhood. But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It’s too hard! It’s too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.

"I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us," Gloria concludes. "And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don’t even know."

I found the series Colosseum on SBS on Demand a few days ago.
Absolutely brilliant. The stories behind its construction, history, politics and events are extraordinary.

The 6 part series has something for everyone. Epic gladiatorial fights that rewrote the rule book. Engineering masterpieces that proved nothing was impossible. The power of Christian martyrdom to overturn the Roman Empire. And much, much more.

It is a story of Rome as seen through the biggest, most innovative public games arena ever created.

Check out the first episode. You will be hooked.

It took a long time to check it out but I finally started watching Ozark on Netflix.

Brilliant show. Dark, complex. Covers much of the ground of Breaking Bad. IMV well worth a look.

Been watching Chantal. Very funny, subversive country cop series on SBS.
Made in Belgium.

Just finished watching the David Beckham documentary on Netflix.

Outstanding. The story of his life. His magical soccer skills. His resilience when he had an entire country screaming and spitting at him. And he still turned up and somehow stayed sane. And kept going and going.

Incidentally he has serious OCD.

Incredible life story told exceptionally well.

tonight on SBS .....

1967: Summer Of Love

8:30PM - 9:25PM
CC

In 1967 an expressive, colourful musical force painted a backdrop of social change, fashion, love, turmoil and war. The world remembers the Summer of Love in 1967 as one of those moments when a unique and creative explosion of music and popular culture arrived in the UK and USA. This programme is driven by the soundtrack of the time, which kept the troops company in Vietnam, powered the Anti-War and Civil Rights movements, and opened the hearts and minds of baby boomers who had matured into teens. This special celebrates 1967 as a famous year full of music and change.

Watched The Duke on Netflix recently. The story is of a old codger with a very righteous bee in his bonnet who steals a portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the UK Art Gallery. He wants to use the painting as a lever to get free BBC licenses for the old age pensioners.

He ends up returning the painting and is promptly arrested and charge with theft. He signs a full confession but pleads not guilty.

The jury are so impressed with him they also find him not guilty and he is release to cheers from a packed Old Bailey.

Sounds a funny, warm hearted but very implausible plot - and then some.

Yeah - No. It is a true story - brilliantly told.
