TV/Films - What ASF members are watching

Sean Micallef is a funny fellow. ... laughed out loud and learnt a few things watching Eve of Destruction on ABC tonight.

Came across "Couples Therapy" on SBS a few nights ago.

Just rivetting. Real people trying to mend their relationships with a counsellor in New York. The SBS story outlines the process quite well.
For me every episode produced stories that resonated from past friends and relationships. The insights and responses were great.

How do they film and make this?

People aren't exactly going to go deep with a bunch of random camerapeople in the room.

Instead, production transformed a New York studio into a beautifully lit and sumptuously decorated office — inspired by Dr Orna's actual office — and then used two-way glass to film, without being visible to the couples and the therapist.

The weeks of filmed one-hour therapy sessions are then edited down into half-hour episodes filled with the kind of breakthroughs those in long-term therapy can only dream of.

Malcolm Gladwell | Talking to Strangers - What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know

Malcom Gladwell is a very unassuming guy. But this story packs an utterly amazing punch. I thought it was intriguing enough to share.

Just watched Douglas is Cancelled" on IVIEW.

Razor sharp story telling that changes tack in an instant. The review gives one a great taste for this story

IMO well worth checking out.

The real star of Douglas is Cancelled is Moffat’s script. The dialogue is ripping, rapid-fire brutal and darkly hilarious. It rests so wickedly on its ensemble, it could almost work on stage were it not on screen. The music also evokes feelings of Succession.

If this is truly where modern media is at in 2024 we are probably all doomed. Otherwise, enjoy this from the cheap seats as a glorious takedown behind the scenes of TV. Unmissable.

So Long, Marianne on SBS is a cut above , focusing on Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian love interest, on the island of Hydra in the early '60s. Noah Taylor channels his best Bill Hunter

Great, great story. Well told. Having Marianne in her last days reading Leonards last letter to her was special.

Watched the last episode last night.
Great writing by Moffatt and the talented cast was first rate. bit of a slog on the second episode though.
Thought the daughter bit was a bit awkward and would have like to have seen a bit more resolution.
Still, good watch -especially the last 2 episodes. Enjoyed it. ****

Watched "The only girl in the Orchestra" last night. Short 30 min doc about Orin O Brien who joined the New Your Philharmonic orchestra in 1966 as the double bassist. At that stage she was the only woman in the orchestra.

Orin was playing in the orchestra for 55 years and only retired when COVID hit . She was then 86 . She is still teaching scores of music students and at 89 has the energy of a 50 year old. Seriously !!.

Fascinating insight into understanding the intricacies of learning/playing/teaching music.
