Rogge urges China to respect human rights pledge

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has called for China to respect its commitment to improve human rights ahead of the Beijing Games.

At a press conference, Mr Rogge emphasised to reporters that Chinese officials promised when they made their bid to host the 2008 Olympics that being awarded the Games would "advance the social agenda of China, including human rights".

"This is what I would call a moral engagement rather than a juridical (legal) one," he said.

"We definitely ask China to respect this moral engagement."

Mr Rogge also said there are no plans to cut short the troubled torch relay.

"This scenario is definitely not on the agenda," he told reporters when asked whether the issue of cutting short the relay would be discussed when IOC executive board members meet in Beijing later this week.

Mr Rogge said a week of protests targeting the Olympic torch relay by groups critical of China had thrown the Olympics into "crisis" but that they would rebound in time for the Beijing Games in August.

Earlier, Mr Rogge said that the controversies had left Olympic athletes confused in the run-up to the Games.

China 'foils Olympic terrorism plots'

Chinese authorities say they have detained 45 terrorist suspects from East Turkestan and foiled plots to carry out suicide bomb attacks and kidnap athletes to disrupt the Beijing Olympics.

Uighur militants have been agitating to establish an independent East Turkestan in China's predominantly Muslim north-western region of Xinjiang, bordering Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Chinese authorities cracked two terrorist groups, one of which belonged to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), Ministry of Public Security spokesman Wu Heping said.

ETIM was listed by the United Nations as a terrorist group in 2002 and has links to Al Qaeda.

Mr Wu said the group asked its members to do trial runs using poisoned meat, poison gas and remote control explosive devices.

Their aim was "to create an international incident with the goal of disrupting the Olympic Games", he said.

The first group, led by Aji Muhammat, bought explosive materials and carried out 13 test explosions.

Suspects in custody confessed they were ordered to commit suicide if arrested. ..... etc

They were thousands of people, not hundreds. It was not a protest to end Chinese human right protests like Channel 9 is trying to twist it into. It was a distorted news report because what happened does not sit with the USA funded free tibet campaign.

You will have to have zero comprehension skill if you cannot see any distortion in the report.
