I disagree. Americans see the right to bear arms as the same as freedom of speech. For many, who don't even own guns, they still believe that someone should have the right that right. They certainly won't believe that the government should be allowed to take that right away.
Just look at the support for handguns...Even assault weapons, which outside the theatre of war have zero use, still manage to get 50% support.

If only 26% favour gun control then let them take the consequences.
BUT -
Something as important as this deserves a referendum, polls can be manipulated.
If a referendum shows the same figures then 26% better move elsewhere, discussion over.
26% favour handgun control, not gun control.
The US Constitution isn't changed by referendum.
The number of people who would want the Second Amendment repealed, I'd hazard, would be less than 10%.
They seem ready to deal with assault (rapid fire) weapons for a start, at least thats something, more damage is done wth those than single shot weapons.
I don't disagree with you Burnsie. What I'm saying is that guns will still be easily available, relatively and absolutely. Assault weapons are indefensible, even for the most ardent gun rights supporter. Getting rid of 30 round magazines would probably be a good move too. The bigger problem is handguns. What happened in Sandy Hook is the big news but the majority of gun homicides are with handguns.
While there are a few exceptions (animal culling etc) I don't see why the average person needs access to these sort of firearms, which Lanza used.

It will take decades to sort things out but if they don't start they'll never finish.
I cant recall any massacre of this type being prevented by an intended victim using a gun of their own.
Well, you've read the NRA's response:
If everybody 3 years and older had an automatic assault rifle, the death toll could've been much lower.
Not sure though, how many would've been caught in the crossfire from scores of "good guys" defending themselves and trying to take the bad guy out. But they would then count as "collateral damage", not murder victims...
