Proactive minority groups invariably get their own way.

Although the National Rifle Assosiation (NRA) is a powerful lobby group with 4.3 million members (according to its website) it needs to be addressed for what it is - a minority group.

The majority of Americans need to mobilise their forces against the new enermy.

The NRA needs to be effectively undermined in the same way the NRA has been unrelenting in sabotaging any government efforts proposing firearm controls.

Perhaps someone over there should set up an opposing association, see how many members they would get. over 4 mill ? easy.........

As is often the way, in many countries including ours, the passionate and vocal minority will outshout the apathetic and lethargic majority. It's not until the silent majority feel strongly enough about an issue to stand up to the almost bullying tactics employed by special interest groups that change can begin. A leader prepared to make a stand and make the tough decisions and energise the populace is required. Obama is great at talking the talk, he has nothing to lose in his second term, has the time arrived for him to walk the walk?

More guns, more security, more sales.
Lives come last in their vision.

Yes, agree, the public need to get vocal, having easy access to guns is crazy
Obama needs to take that stand.

If someone over there doesn't set up an opposing group to the NRA within a month they're just not serious.

It's a no brainer, NRA has 4m members an opposing group would have 10 times that in no time, let the polititians not act then.

Although i am not very knowledgable on the subject, i beleive there are a number of alternative groups. Just none with the backing of big money and none that are centralised as the NRA is

Yes there would be but I thought the sheer force of numbers would force change, perhaps now with social media being so widely used something might happen.

I do think change will come Mr Burns.

People are disgusted with his statements -- its all $$$
Who wants their children in a school, like in a prison, with security guards around them?

And thats exactly how its becoming...

Agree.

I feel that with social media, new media such as Drudgereport.com and others, the tide has turned against the NRA.

More atrocities will continue to occur as the nutters will buy up and stockpile arms before Obama acts.

gg

Yes you're right gg, the next one won't be far away.

Wonder why they don't have a referendum (if they have them in the US) it would give Obama a clear mandate to act.

Somewhere between 40-50% of Americans own guns. The NRA may have some more extreme views but much of what they advocate is mainstream American opinion.

Changing or removing the Second Amendment has absolutely zero chance of ever passing.

I wouldn't be so sure, plenty who have guns would rather not, but do as they think they can prrotect themselves.

I have lived in the USA and worked most of my life working with Americans, I would say that 95PC of them own guns, most of them will own many.

Have a referendum, that will clear it up. If they want their guns let'm put up with the killings. leave it up to the people to decide.

If you have a gun tote'n society then the only response to gun violence is to get a bigger gun!

I disagree. Americans see the right to bear arms as the same as freedom of speech. For many, who don't even own guns, they still believe that someone should have the right that right. They certainly won't believe that the government should be allowed to take that right away.

Just look at the support for handguns...Even assault weapons, which outside the theatre of war have zero use, still manage to get 50% support.

Well going by the Columbine school shooting, they had armed guards around the school and it did nothing, so good gun, bad gun theory doesnt work --- so they better think of something new....
