I am in the process of developing an application called Stockwatch to assist me in learning about the Australian stock market.

In return for the invaluable information I am getting from this site, I thought I would make it freely available to members here. If you think it may be of use to you then feel free to use it.

Attached is a screen shot of the main page.

To access it, go to jskinner.110mb.com and then to the download page

I hope it is of some use.

Regards

John

Oh great - just what I need. Another kid smarter than me...LOL

Seriously, Well done John and thanks for making it available.

Guys,

You are going to have to be rather patient with me here. I am a real newby to all of this.

Firstly, jet328 What is s&p200? I have heard of the all ords. Are these different exchanges?

You can now download the latest version. 0.1

This is still beta software until all the bugs are ironed out.

Does anyone know of a good site for hosting web sites?

The s&p200 jet refers to is another index.

The All Ords is an index that measure the performance of the Australian Stock Exchange. The S&P/ASX200 is also an index that provides a measure of the performance of the Australian Stock Exchange, but it measures differently.

The All Ords measures the performance of about 500 stocks to make up the index,
while the S&P/ASX200 measures the perfomance of the top 200 stocks.

The All Ords uses the code XAO
While the code for the S&P/ASX200 is XJO

Where is the data being accessed from?
Most free data is 20 minute delayed.

I'll repost this in case you missed it but I'm not aware of any free intraday snapshots that are not 20 minute delayed. If people are using the price alerts in this app. and the data is delayed then they should really be made aware of it.

Just my :2twocents

;)

Sorry, I missed your post before. It uses e-trade.com for the prices. As far as I am aware they are real time. I stand to be corrected if they are not.

Does 20 minutes delay really make that much difference?

John

ETrade clients pay for real-time quotes so I assume the quotes from the website for non-clients are 20 minute delayed.

Depends on what people are using your app. for. Everyone's situation is different. My concern is if someone used the price alerts not realising that prices are delayed by 20 minutes. Prices can move an awful long way in that short amount of time.

Ok, I stand corrected. Apparently prices are real-time. Seems odd that ETrade clients pay a fee to receive live quotes when they are live on their website anyway?

By the way, the screen with the indexes showing above is just a mock up of how I think it could look. If you want this information added I need input on what the screen should actually look like.

I suppose this is more of a question for the moderator than anyone.

As this is an application I am prepared to develop for the use of this forum's members in general, should this thread be moved into another area, rather than an area specifically for beginners?

Any question I have related to the workings of the share market will be asked here.

John

Hi Skinner:

Hi John,

Thanks for making your Stockwatch application available for free to ASF members!

Even though the 'Trading/Investing Resources' forum is a subforum of the 'Beginners Lounge' that doesn't necessarily mean that it is only for beginners. When the forum was first created there weren't many threads in it and at the time it was felt that it was most appropriate as a subforum of the 'Beginners Lounge' as beginners are generally the most eager consumers of books, software, courses and other trading/investing resources as they initially try and ramp up their level of knowledge.

At some point it may become a forum in its own right or perhaps moved to become a subforum of the 'Trading Strategies/Systems' forum.

You do make a very valid point and it has certainly got me thinking.
