When placing a sell order through commsec I notice you simply type in the units you want to sell and the price...

What would happen if you accidentally put in more units then you actually have?

I didn't, but was curious what would happen... simply because it doesnt have an option to sell ALL owned units for that particular share... you cant even see how many you own while typing them in...

I imagine the request would be rejected. Commsec allows you to short sell but from memory you need to be approved for that. Also it's done in a different sub-section of the commsec site.

Best to call up Commsec and confirm.

I did that once...i already had a sell order (that i had forgotten about) for like 7000 of my 10000 shares in XYZ and decided to drop my price..and just filled out a new sell order while the other order was still open.

I got a little message telling me i didn't have that many shares available.
