New Citizenship Requirements

The age part I was told by a IMMI officer who handles citizenship forms on a daily basis, and the other part is just what I think, as I have seen it, My uncle has invested well over a million dollars in Australia, tax he pays = :p def more than me x 100!!!, and his whole family is australian citizen so, why shouldn't he be allowed to be citizen just cause hes got bad english?
:)

It's not a question of why shouldn't he be allowed.

It is a question of why should he be allowed?

The number of dodgy people that get let in here cause they have a family member here is ridiculous.

If they wanna be with their family maybe they or their family should go home?

This is not aimed at your uncle of course, but other 'less desirable' immigrants shall we say.

If someone is investing a million $$ I'm all for them being here!

True agree with that, especially with the fake marriages. I think another requirement back then was he had to have an initial amount of $$$ in australia, something rediculous like 300k, as if one were trying a dodgy they probually wouldn't have that amount. As back then he didn't do it as a investment immigration. Might add hes family has been here for over 20yrs.

But yes I agree alot of people do get in just because of family and when they get in they just live off us tax payers, so maybe they should just raise the requirements a bit, i.e must be prefessional or economically sound. As if it was just a matter of English, its not that hard to learn if they were determined to come. All it would take is a few night courses to pass the test.
:)

I honestly think Australia needs to be greedy.

Allow in highly qualified or highly wealthy people.

And we all benefit. We all get richer.

Although that is not very caring or humanitarian is it? But this is a stock forum :D

I'm all for letting in a limited number of genuine refugees (although how you find the genuine ones is something the UK has spectacularly failed at) but I agree, the first and foremost rule of immigration law should be "what contribution can/will you make to Australia?"

I think a while it was like that (was either money or professional), hence my uncle had to contribute before they were allowed to migrate, but then they changed that later.

:)

Excuse me, but paying $1 mln or $10 mln tax is strictly business.

Citizenship should not be offered likely, given here and there, just because somebody pays enough tax.

People can stay in Australia indefinitely as permanent residents if they qualify for criteria.

Citizenship should be treated like something special, people of good character, people who accept values, know enough to be able to know that their desire is genuine.

And on what basis are you judging these people not of good character or accept values? Im not saying all of them, cause I do agree half of them are dodgy. I can say in this case he is more of a citizen then some people I know.

'know enough to be able to know that their desire is genuine'

Please explain??? So the IMMI is supposed to know each and every person is genuine - thats impossible. Put them on a lie detector???

BTW, I wasn't just saying it, they were the requirements back then.

Get real realist, it's almost impossible to come to Australia now, you have to jump through so many hoops, have zillions of dollars in the bank as surety & now be able to pass a dictation test (probably have to write something like yes I am a Liberal voter. Johnny is good.)
My experience of living in Thailand for 2 years meeting & marrying my wife, then the embassy staff look down there nose at us & say to my wife "you don't get to go to Australia just because you marry an Australian", months of waiting in Bangkok for endless red tape, belittling interveiws with snooty nosed Australian public servants, even had to get a letter from my parents to say they had met my wife & approved. I was bl**dy 30 yrs old, police background checks, medical checks. THAT WAS 15 YEARS AGO. Friends tell me it's much much worse - impossible - now.
WAKE UP AUSTRALIA we are a lucky country, give some others a fair go! Australia is great because of immigration, hell we're nearly all immigrants going back a few generations. :banghead:

I have a feeling it's loosened up substantially... for whitefellas at least. There have been lots of run of the mill poms turning up recently.

I remember it was nearly impossible for any Europeans to imigrate a few years ago... and these were quite highly qualified people with reasonable wealth.

Could it be possible that equal rights are exercised?
