Doesn't surprise me really.
Paul Cook (Sex Pistols' drummer) was also the original producer, and later a drummer, for Bananarama after all so he's had some actual involvement with pop.
Here he is with them live (well, OK, it's a completely mimed performance for the BBC not actually live but near enough, looks the part):
Quite a few odd things happen in music in terms of who does what if you look at the details of who worked on a recording and so on. There's a lot of cross over between bands, someone worked on an individual song for someone else etc, and a lot of them are things that aren't a logical fit.
